Can anyone tell me what this might be? Pics included

I was giving Squallie some scritches last night and felt this small bump on his back. At first I thought it might be a small scab from rough play with one of the other cats but on closer exploration have discovered it is a small raised bump that bleeds if I try to manipulate it. It's about 4 inches up his back from his tale, over his spine. Does anyone have any idea what it might be, or how worried I should be about it?

A sebaceous cyst, maybe? Or a skin tag sort of thing? It wasnt bleeding until you played around with it, right? I had a kitty with one on her head, vet just snipped it off with scissors, bled like heck then went away.
If it were me, I would just keep an eye on if for a few days and see what it does. I wouldn't worry too terribly much, but I know these guys really keep us on our toes, don't they?

Thanks. Yes, we sure do worry! Of course, the first thing that came to my mind was some sort of cancer-I doubt it's really that dire, but that's where my mind automatically went. I'll watch it for a few days and see if it changes at all.
 
The first pic is strange, almost a perfect circle. Is that loss of hair around the bump or just the way you're holding him?
 
Maryland is not a tropical climate. Is it possible it's the remnants of a bug bite or some bug left a stinger? I assume he's an indoor cat but there's all kinds of creepy things in our basement. I had a big Tom that ate a Bee years ago. Of course there's a bunch of different bees, hornets and wasps. Does it hurt him if touched? Is it only blood or kind of watery? Does he try and scratch it? Being close to the spine is disconcerting. Best of luck.

No, doesn't look like an insect bite. It does seem to bother him if I mess with it, but he doesn't try to scratch it.
 
If you try to move it, does it move with the skin? If it does, it's attached to the skin, instead of anything underneath. You might want to have your vet check it if it doesn't go away. Put your mind to rest.

My Maggie had little bumps all over her back along her spine, plus one right between her ears on her forehead. Kind of looked like a horn had been removed from a unicorn. The first thing my vet did was try to move it. She said Maggie's bumps were like little warts. Said not to worry, but to check them occasionally to see if they had changed or grown. She also checked them every time we were in the office. It's like all the junk we people grow on our bodies as we get older!

Is it warts, moles or both that have a lot of blood flow beneath them? Something you're not supposed to pick at in the mirror, like the hairs growing out of my ears. I can play Senior Men's Softball now. Nothing like a bunch of old men arguing over rules that have been around since Babe Ruth! When did I get old?

I think it's attached to the skin, rather than underneath it.
 
I made the mistake of googling spider bites on cats, Don't do that. DON'T.
Probably just some sort of bite, I wouldn't worry much. I'd wash with peroxide and rub in a bit of polysporin. keep it clean until it heals.

My cat had a cyst on her chin a bit ago, probably just part of her regular 'acne' but it was big. The vet wouldn't drain it. She rubbed it on everything until it opened. I cleaned it out and it healed fine.

Well, now you know I'm going to HAVE to Google spider bites on cats, lol.
The spot looks like some kind of raised mole or something like that. I think I'm going to take him into the vet on Friday and have it checked out.

If anyone has had a needle biopsy they're very quick and require only a local anesthetic. My dog had two but thanks to modern "science" they were both wrong. Both biopsies and two ultrasounds indicated cancer; instead it was a cyst that became an ulcer. So we lived through a year of frantic "Waiting for our dog to waste away" all for nothing. What really grated on our nerves was that neither clinic could even say they were sorry for the emotional grief they put us through. We didn't want a dozen roses and a card, just a simple "Sorry, we don't know everything." Just admit it if you're not sure!!!
 
Gordy has a few sebaceous cysts and they are harmless.

That being said, with it being a different color, I wouldn't be able to say for certain that you shouldn't worry.

Glad you're bringing him in! I was paranoid about Gordy's until I found time to get them looked at.
