So when Mitz had her teeth cleaned a couple weeks ago, the dental surgeon mentioned that her kidney levels were high, something my regular vet did not tell me. I got a copy of the lab results today but I have no idea what any of the numbers really mean. I've added all the info they gave me in the 'Labs' page of Mitz's spreadsheet but here's the most recent result:
GLU 159
BUN 41HIGH
CREA 2
BUN/CREA 21
TP 8.3
ALB 3.5
GLOB 4.8
ALB/GLOB 0.7
ALT 102
ALKP 39
FRU 317

Thanks,
Joan

A high BUN can be caused by dehydration, but for really good info, go to
felinecrf.com. They explain everything really well.

BUN means blood urea nitrogen. It will go up some with a higher protein diet, too.

What are the normal ranges for BUN and Creatinine (CREA). Creatinine is a better blood indicator of kidney problem than BUN since BUN is influenced by diet as already said.
Do you have any valves for urine specific gravity (USG)? That is a better, early indicator of kidney problems.

Normal USG range for cats is 1.020 - 1.040. If you go to felinecrf.com, the other numbers are under "tests and diagnostics", you have to scroll down a little ways tho.

@Mogmom and Goofus, thanks for checking in. While the info on Tanya's site was helpful, I'm still not sure what the numbers really mean specific to Mitz. My main concern is, if she's got potential kidney issues, what do I need to be doing about it and which numbers are most important to pay attention to.

@Larry and Kitties, her most recent urinalysis was in January and at that time the specific gravity was 1.019 so on the low end of the normal range. (The lab report shows normal range as 1.015-1.060.)

@BJM, I'm hoping the BUN and creatinine numbers are a reflection of Mitz's diet.

Thanks,

Joan

Hi Larry,
Wow, the more I'm finding out, the more irritated I'm getting at my vet. She has never gone over any of the lab results in any detail with me - just leaves a message saying everything looks fine.
The last phosphorus number I see is from over a year ago, March of 2014. It was 4.1 out of a range of 3.1-7.5 mg/dL.
Thanks,
Joan
