She is mystifying me. I can't figure out how she got down to such low numbers/dose and has now lost all hold on them. I ended up shooting .2u in the hopes that I can "knock" her back into the 80-125 range and then hold her with .1u. Might not work.

We had a little cuddle session this morning - so second time in 12 hrs that I got her purring. I was walking past her and bend down to pat her and she started purring. After 3 mins bent over I picked her up so the blood could get out of my head. lol. She usually doesn't like being picked up and wiggles and growls to get down in about 15 secs. She actually stayed in my arms for about 5 mins, purring away while I stroked her head and neck. That's a first - and another in the growing list of "Cami never does...." getting proved wrong here. I was told she hated being picked up.

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

Nice surprise: +8 was 74! Yay!

Nicer surprise: she came when I called her for her test and when I picked her up and put her on the table... she was purring! Purred through the entire test (and all the treats)!

I was gone from about +3 to +8 (and forgot to test before I left), but right before I left she finally was lying on the little rug I got for her and put in the front hall. Got it last week and it had been sitting there untouched the whole time.

Yay!!!! Nice come back! Sheila, it sounds like she's starting to feel at home. What a great update. :-D

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

Looks like both Cami and Autumn are going for the title of Come Back Kid...lol. Maybe Cami just had to back up a bit to show Autumn how its done. :-D

Is it something in the air? Autumn has been overly purry and affectionate the last few days too...I'm eve starting to get kisses after her tests...something she has never done before.

I just about did when I got the first one from Autumn...lol. So better make sure you are always near something soft to land on when Cami gives you your first kiss.

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

Sheila, I adopted Larry as a companion for Pumbaa about 8 years ago. It took him about 5 years to let me pick him up and hold him for a minute, without clawing me and running away. And he didn't have any health problems. He just did not adjust well to changes in his environment.

Now, I can pick him up and hold him and cuddle, and make him purr. And he talks to me regularly now. And he seeks me out for snuggling/kneading/petting time.

Sounds like Cami is adjusting much quicker than Larry did. :) Once it fully hits her that you are the one making her feel better (insulin and enough food) and offering loving, as well, she will become your constant shadow because you were her savior. (((HUGS)))

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

She had a nice pmPS of 103. This is in line with where she had been before the last two days. Before I tried the questionable pen again. Well, it's not questionable any more. It's definitely bad! So she is back to .1u and we will go from here.

Had another brushing session on my lap with purrs. Also, she tried to get on the table herself for testing tonight, but she tried to jump on a drafting chair, which is higher than a regular chair, and fell. I showed her how to get on a box next to a reg chair and she went right up the rest of the way on her own.

What is interesting to me is that her face is changing - like its relaxing so she looks less angry/sad and more alert/hopeful. I'll have to see if I can catch that in a photo.

That is wonderful! :-D And I'm so glad that you identified a bad pen and it wasn't Cami after all!

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

I check in now and then to see how everyone is doing and I'm always thrilled to learn
about the growing relationship between you and Cami....it's very touching :-D ..... You're like the Cat Whisperer.

Re: Cami 12/7 amPS 170

Oh, I'm hardly the cat whisperer... but she is finally letting down her defenses and maybe beginning to trust me - or at least to trust in the treats!

She was 103 again this morning.

We had a cuddle in bed this morning too. I picked her up and put her on the bed - which she usually only stays for about a minute, but this time she stayed for at least 15 mins! And purred the whole time.

But, she got my finger again when I was feeding treats. She isn't lunging for them again, but if she thinks the treat is in her mouth, she bites down and just keeps going with very sharp teeth! I wonder if they make kevlar gloves....?

Cami doesn't seem so sad anymore....thrills my heart! I just LOVE when they finally figure out they aren't going somewhere else to be 'stared at' like a zoo animal.

BIG HUGE HUG and BIG HUGE YARD DANCE!!!!!!!!! Dance is too BIG to do inside without wrecking the whole house!!!

Here are some photos:

Cami on her rug - wish this was in focus...

Cami's face in October....................................... and yesterday

I don't think she has gained more than about 3/4 lb, but her face is fuller now. And I think her fur is filling out a little.

ETA: her +4 was 81

Her eyes were definitely dull when I got her. That was one of the first things I noticed about her.

Well, she has climbed up to 181 at +8. Not sure how that happened. She didn't look like she was headed low at +4 (81). And she hasn't had anything HC either. I guess I need to go back to getting every 2-3 hrs until she is firmly back on track....

Could that 181 still be the shed from the bad insulin working its way out of Cami's system?

No. First of all, as far as I am concerned, the concept of a shed is totally false. All we are dealing with are overlap of doses - and some other factors like dose to absorption rate ratios:
The absorption of "intermediate-acting" and "long-acting" insulin is dose-dependent, with a decreasing absorption rate with increasing dose of insulin. (Hildebrandt P., Danish Medical Bulletin. 1991 Aug;38(4):337-46.)

And second of all, if the "bad" insulin was bad it was because it was ineffective, so there would be nothing to "work out", especially not after she quickly reestablished decent numbers yesterday.

What I am seeing, with the slight drop at PS tonight, is that she is having an inverted curve, which commonly indicates too much insulin. I just have to "catch" the low that is causing the rebound to be sure. I just don't have enough stable data on her to know when she nadirs - or when she is likely to drop low if she gets too much insulin. Looks like I need an overnight test or two, which I hate doing because it is really hard for me to fall asleep and then really hard to drag myself awake in the middle of the night - that's why I hardly even have overnight tests.
