Robbie hasn't eaten since 9am this morning when he got his shot of 2.00 - he was tested at 12 noon 289 and 3pm 297 - I arrived home and at 5pm he was 488. I called my vet. Couldn't get our regular vet but got the emergency vet who's a nice woman I've talked to before about Robbie but not his diabetes. Without full knowledge of his situation and records she suggested I give him .50 to try and bring him into a "safer" range and monitor him carefully again tonight and make the decision at 8:30pm (11.5 hours after his morning shot - I need to move him slowly back to 7:30/7:30) what to do and calling her again if I needed to. He was screaming for dinner and 5:30 is dinner time so I gave him dinner and the shot of .50. At 8:30 he will be 3 hours off of his meal (although I know he'll be looking for more food before than)- so we'll see where that puts us.
I cannot check him for ketones don't have the testing kit yet and still have not figured our how I'll test a cat that won't let me near him while he's in the litter box. (suggestions here are welcome). I've had about 3 hours of sleep and a rough day at work and no good news on my dad in the hospital plus I'm sitting here with a very messy house I need to attend to so I'm about at my wits end. You all know the drill --- Thoughts, suggestions, whatever anyone is up to or comfortable with as always appreciated. He is acting a bit edgy and just chased his "sister" away from his "spot" by his food - not terribly unusual for him but he was a tad nastier than normal - but he's alert and sitting looking out the window.

Just re-read some posts and saw the input on Ketones testing I think I was so exhausted I didn't absorb that input - thank you to Carl and anyone else who offered thoughts on how to test for Ketones with a bladder shy pain in the neck cat ;-)

I have a BIG orange boy(maine coon). He didn't like anyone near him when he was peeing, but waited until he was in the process and then stuck a bowl under his pee flow and it worked great! Whatever will work. A plastic bowl or sm plastic plate. Some others have suggested the fish gravel, etc and that works great for them. Just try everything you can. Got the strips at Walgreens store.

Good luck with it! It's very important to check. Has he had ketones + before? If can't do, go to the vet's office and they can cath them and check. Just get it checked with those high numbers.

It could be a bounce because of the double doses earlier. It might take a couple of cycles to clear. Being patient is the most frustrating thing of this disease. Hang in there!

thanks - I'm gonna try - he never has tested positive at the vets but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a problem. Patience has never been a virtue I have had in abundance.

Me too! I guess FD has taught be alot. I'm learning slowly, although i don't really like it. Not kicking and screaming as much anymore and learning to adjust to the up's and down's of FD

It will get easier. You really are doing a GREAT job!!!

Ok now go outside & scream! Come back inside, take a few deep breathes & exhale. Not looking at your house or putting in thought into anything else go run a hot shower.

Do you feel better yet?

NOW CONQUER!!!

I have read some members put a spoon or shallow bowl, small plate to trap the urine to test. Maybe even a small piece of plastic just laying in the box. Maybe something like that would work.
I test strips you can purchase at Walmart I think they are about $6. Some Walmarts keep the strips behind the counter.

When I am off schedule I move in 30 increments until I am back on schedule. Maybe you could just give him a small spoon of food when he is screaming to tide him over. It may help you gain a 1hr or 2 hrs for you to get back on schedule.

As for your dad I hope he gets to feeling better very soon.

You need sometime to rejuvenate. Please take a few moments to yourself. When people get tired it's easy to get stressed easily.

Hers is big hug for you! :YMHUG:

I've heard that a ladel works really well too.

I don't have much experience with it because Harley had no modesty, I just followed him in and waved the stick behind him

thanks Jenn and Robin - the dog rolled in dead fish heads today, even after a bath she stinks to high heaven.... ya can't make this **** up. Going to set an alarm to get up in a couple of hours and test him again. He's sleeping by his food bowl purring loudly. I give him small amounts of food when he's really pestering for it and mix it with water (thanks for that tip from here) and it keeps him quiet. I also give him a cat nip toy, hug him, have the dog play with him etc. he's a real brat - when he gets really "hungry" he climbs up on to the side tables and scratches lamp shades and knocks over lamps -he's a real riot. Gonna try whatever I can for the pee collection. First time around with this situation I tried sneaking up on him and he walked out of the box peeing as he did and got it all over the place. Just charming.

Nice, dead fish heads. That will take a while to fade away.

One day I noticed that someone was peeing right NEXT to the lb. I couldn't figure out why, did someone have a UTI? Was someone mad? Wern't the lb's clean enough? So I see Harley heading to the lb and I grab a stick and follow him in, he climbs into the lb and proudly pees over the side. :YMSIGH:

Most of my guys were ferals, so they were accustomed to peeing UP trees. I taught Stanley to stay squatting, but some of the others continue to rise... Instead of conventional litter boxes, I've got Rubbermaid tubs. That way, I take the tub outside, hose & scrub, instead of scrubbing the walls, floors, baseboards, etc... Ya gotta love em!

Here's something no one has mentioned, but sometimes after a "scrub-out", I'll put the litter box back but unfilled. Maybe he'll use the box w/o litter... then it's a dip and voila! I had a cat years ago, that following a bladder infection, she actually PREFERRED the empty litter box. You had to stay on top of it, cuz litter really has some great odor controllers in it... but flush, rinse and back down. Think how much I must've saved in kitty litter!

Fish heads... ummmmm... I can appreciate it. My dog Murphy rolled in someones fish emulsion that they'd poured around a tree for fertilizer. :o She LOVED IT.... She smelled AWFUL!!! Picture me & my dog in someone elses bathtub - WITHOUT a hand-held shower head; me pushing a 35# dog under the spout... not pretty. VERY STINKY... Had to take her home... don't think she ever got an invitation for another play date...

Vinegar will help w/ the smell. Suds the pup w/ shampoo, then pour white vinegar generously over the top and rub in thoroughly before rinsing. (Vinegar also takes stinky dog/cat smells out of laundry).

You're having WAY too much fun lately!!!

Vinegar! Darn... we used to use that when I was a kid and one of our dogs decided she didn't like being left alone at all and peed on the carpet in my moms bedroom. I didn't think of that with our dog today. Since she did this awful deed while on a play date with her dad I "let" him bath her - what fish heads were doing in a park about 1/2 mile from any water is beyond me.
So my gut said shoot 2.00 but since I'd given Robbie that little bump at AMPS +9 of .50 I shot 1.50 and now here we are at PMPS +2 with 274. He's been squirming around for food so he got about 1/8 of a can with water after the ear test. No he's milling around his toys and contemplating bathing. Another test at 11:30 and I think if he's still in a good space I'll go to bed - I'm truly exhausted.

Thanks for sharing !

Here's a memory i'll never forget. My dog loves to find anything smelly to roll in (cow poop, bear poop, dead fish, frogs, rats, and skunk=PU). BUT the worst EVER was one day we were hiking on a trail and Annie(my dog) went off the trail for a side trip for something really "smelly". When we called her back she had poop all over her head and side that she rolled in and she REALLY, REALLY stunk worse then a skunk smell. I went to investigate where she rolled and got really grossed out. Some hiker had popped(runny kind) behind a rock and didn't bury it. Human poop is the worst smell and the hardest to get off a dog. Fortunely we were near a waterfall and we immed had her rinse it off in the water. BUT, she stilled smelled all the way home in the car. The whole family was grossed out. We washed her off 2x outside in the hose but couldn't get the smell off her. So i used the tomato juice trick and it worked. It took 2 washings though. YUCK! I have never let her wonder off the trail w/o me again.

Thought i would share my grossology story... Hope i didn't gross you out too much!

Oh, i have a maine coon too. He is 7yrs old and my big lover boy. What a wonderful cat. How many pounds is your kitty? Mine used to be 23lbs until the FD. Now he is 17lbs.

oh, boy that is gross I thought you were going to say deer poop - that is the all time worst for me - my moms golden used to find it all the time and just go to town in it - so gross.
Robbie is trying to sneak into bed with Ginger now - probably loving the fishy smell. He's doing good I think I'll go to bed now I don't see him dropping too low from 234 at +3
