had to go away over night, got my mom to come give satan his insulin but she wasn't gonna check his sugar, came home and his sugar was: (edited in as numbers are being tracked)
28 at 6:45, was eating a can of low carb as i took this reading, dumped half a packet of high carb gravy food.
36 at 7:03 fed cat another half a can of food (it was a can with a carb count of 10 or 11 i'd have to double check)
58 at 7:25 put out the rest of the can of medium? carb food
(edited in)
68 at 7:55 - wanted to get more sugars but kitty wedged himself under the bed, and i didn't have the heart to chase him out
98 at 9:05 - kitty wants to go run around outside - put out the rest of the high carb food
296 at 11:30pm (i fell asleep)
462 at 7:25am (1.75 u)

-back to the post-

he's not symptomatic, (although he put up no fight for the ear pokes) but was pretty hungry acting when i walked in. i often leave him for 15+ hours because of work, this was 18+ hours, i'm sure that he didn't get too much insulin, my mom is a nurse i'm sure she could measure it properly.

well anyway. just had to vent cuz i'm stressed. i bet we'll be fine.

so i'm guessing- no insulin until tomorrow

any advice?

You're right no insulin tonight, and this definitely calls for a dose reduction! Now he will more than likely bounce pretty high by morning, both from the skipped shot tonight, and from going that low today.

7:55 68 kitty still seems hungry.... ate 1.5 cans of low carb food plus a table spoon of high carb. some food left in the dish for now.
definitely not so docile anymore. fighting me off with ear pokes. poke again soon. kitty is not trusting me currently. poor cat man

Yep he is going to be hungry, but that is a good thing because food is going to get those numbers up again and his body knows that.

thanks mel....

just a quick question if you have the time, and knowledge-

why a dose reduction, prior to this i was thinking i'd start increasing his insulin- normally his numbers stay in the 200+ range, lots of 300+ numbers on 2units bid.

my cat probably does a lot of bouncing. my schedule is erratic. this 26 number was at 18+ hours his previous 2 unit shot, and its possible he gobbled all his food up fast, but it was frozen and plentiful. and usually he's okay after 15-16 hours...... just when i thought i had it figured out that he needed more insulin? less?!

ahhh.

thank you anyway. i'm definitely not doing any increasing. and i'll keep checking for as long as i can stay awake. but probably less frequently.

All I must say is that the rule is feed the 40s and if you have a 30 or 28, you slap down the biggest can of HC you have.... forget about the low carb at that number.
Never mind about signs, most cats don't give us any signs, and also retest when you get that number, and frequently.

updated sugar/ my reactions to readings

Hi hi!

I had read this right when you posted, but I was reading it on my cell and I typed out a whole response (I realized again why I hate touch screens) and then the 'submit' button didn't want to work. Ahhh! I am soooo happy to see that Mel was around!

Kudos for being so super calm about it all. Seems like you're on the right track now! I agree that this does call for a dose reduction.... :)

I see that he's at a 98 now, so things are looking better. Hope you manage to get some rest this evening!

As far as why the reduction...Because you don't want him to get down that low again. Anytime you get a 40 during his cycle you want to reduce the dose. Now some of us, and I'm included in this will shoot the same dose as prior on the next shot since Musette will bounce so high off those low numbers to give her just a little extra insulin to fight off those bounces, but then the shot after that one I will shot the reduce dosage even though she may still be a little higher than normal, but usually not as high as right after the low numbers. If he can hypo on a dose then that dose needs to come down. It is way better to be a little on the higher side than on the too low side, especially since you work wacky and long hours.

thank you everyone! i'm pretty good at staying calm. i'm a labor and delivery nurse. so until theres a blue baby, or half of someones blood on the floor or seizing. i'm calm. and than i am still calm but i yell and direct people around a lot

when i went to sleep his sugar was 296 at 11:30pm (i had dozed off missing the time i meant to check), and i left some food out. and fell asleep.

today will be a blood sugar checking game again i am sure. i'll be trying for my every 2 hour pokes.

ill update as the day goes on.... 462 this am... gave 1.75. (reduce!)

i guess i'm seeing the bounce.

thanks again.
