Callie's UTI is finally better

Poor little Callie has been going through quite a time with a stubborn UTI. She had been peeing everywhere but the litter box and her BG numbers shot up to 500-600. She started her third antibiotic on Thursday and last night she used her litter box. Today her numbers have dropped down to the 100's. It's been at least 3 weeks since she has had such good numbers.

Now I'm worried about lowering her Vetsulin dose. The vet keept raising it, now I think I need to lower it. I need to go to church tomorrow, so I don't want to stay up all night testing her. Would it be OK to give her half of the 51/2 units she is supposed to get? That puts her back where she was before the UTI.

Donna thats great that Callie is doing better. I don't use that insulin so can't advice. You might want to post your question in the forum for Vetsulin.

As the UTI clears, it is likely the insulin dose may need to be lowered. Vigilant home testing, and being prepared with How to Handle a Hypo will help keep her safe.

My vet explained what to do if she goes hypo. She has her own bottle of honey. I keep a plastic box on the kitchen counter with everything she might need if I'm not here. My vet gave me a sheet that shows how to give her insulin. I keep it with a can of her food, some syringes, alcohol and a paper with all info that might be needed. My daughter has been giving allergy shots to her dog once a week, so she can do shots. I showed her how to test but I need to have her do it herself. I also need to teach my hubby and granddaughter. We never know when we will get hit by a truck on the freeway. It's important that we have backup beans just in case to take care of all our furbabies. I found out that my vet will keep my CC on file if one of my babies needs to go to the vet. I asked about that years ago when we were going on vacation. I hope I haven't forgotten anything.

I think you need to go with your gut feeling, it is easier to lower then adjust the dose back up than to deal with a hypo. As you are home testing can you set up a spreadsheet, if we see her numbers it is easier to advise. Have you been checking for ketones when her numbers are running high?

I lowered her insulin dose tonight because I was afraid she might go hypo when I was sleeping. I did set my alarm to go off at 1am so I can check on her. She dropped more then 200points this afternoon from what she was testing at just two days ago, I really afraid of what it will do tonigh

I haven't tried to test for ketones. With my arthritis, It's hard to get down to hold the strip. I did order a meter that tests for ketones. I'm just waiting for it to get here.

I gave her 3units. I tested her at +2 and +4. I finally got my spreadsheet, if that helps and I did it right.

Those numbers look fine, you may find you need to reduce the morning dose as well, or make some adjustments to even out her doses. She may drop a bit further as she gets better. She is dropping into blue numbers mid cycle which is what you want to see.
