I haven't been able to post for awhile. I've been down with the flu bug. I HATE the flu in the summer! But, I'm on the mend, so it's back to life as usual, whatever that is!
Callie Mae is doing absolutely WONDERFUL!!!
She is, after all, a miracle cat....lol
Her bladder infection seems to be clearing up. Only 2 more days on the dreaded baytril. I did ask the dr. about it. He told me not to get to worked up over it. The permanent blindness comes from long term use and that she is not taking it long enough. :roll:
He also said that she absolutely, without a doubt, had an infection. And that I would be able to see a difference myself in a day or 2 with her urine. Well, it doesn't have that same putrid smell and it's almost clear whereas before, it was pretty dark.
Now, the other amazing thing going on is Callie Mae is on day 5 with no insulin and she is in those beautiful green double digits!
Read about Rusty possibly going OTJ, so I know to just keep en eye on her.
I wonder,.... is it possible that her bladder infection was keeping her numbers a little elevated (lower 100's), and now that it is clearing up, she's coming down to the greens?
I think I also read that an antibiotic can raise her bg, so would that mean that once the baytril is done, her numbers could come down even further?
Is it possible for a kitty to hypo if they are not on insulin? That's what's scares me. I have this freak cat that has to be watched all the time so they don't bottom out!..lol
Nothing like having to keep honey and such close by for a backwards diabetic cat... :lol:
I even called the number on the Friskie's can to ask for coupons. Told them I see coupons all day for tasty treasure's and what not, but that I have a special needs kitty that can't have the gravy and sauce foods. "Frank" told me he would send me some coupons for some free cans of the Classic Pate!!

What wonderful news. Yes, the infection can raise bg levels so she may go down lower as she gets well. The good news is that you don't have to worry about hypo. A cat off insulin cannot hypo. Some kitties routinely hang out in the 40s and 50s. It's their normal range. You will have to see where Callie Mae hangs out when she is off antibiotics and no more infection.

So happy for you and Callie! Great news all around that her BG #'s are so great w/o insulin and she's on the mend from the bladder infection. Yay!!! I love success stories. Sounds like you'll be adding Callie to the recent remissions page in a week or two.

Just dropping in to check in on you guys and am glad to see things are going so well! Paws crossed Callie Mae kicks this UTI and the #'s stay green. :mrgreen:

I'm wondering..........................
Is it possible that Callie isn't a diabetic at all, but that her numbers were so high due to being on a high carb dry food only diet her whole life? And now that her diet is more species appropriate, her numbers are going back into a normal range?
I just think it is truly miraculous that she has gone completely insulin free from just diet alone, or is that typical? :?:
 
I would say that we see about 10 - 20% of kitties that respond to a diet change, some within a week, some within a few weeks. The other 80% or so need insulin for several months or longer. Some need insulin for years, or forever. I was helping a local friend who had been feeding 43% carb dry food and within two weeks, the kitty was off insulin. So yes, I think the diet can make the difference, but I do think there is a predisposition for diabetes. Millions of cats today are eating high carb dry food and are not likely to develop diabetes. Suppose it is like people. Some people have miserable, high fat, high carb diets and never become diabetic.

The thing to remember is that she is sensitive to carbs, so she must always eat lo carb food.
 
Yay, so happy she is doing great, that is AWESOME!!! I think most cats we see have diabetes caused by diet and/or steroids, right? Type 1 diabetics, like with people, I think are less common. She still has Type 2 diabetes though. I would guess that her pancreas, like all the other kitties, kept up with all the carbs in the dry food for years, til it finally was exhausted and just couldn't keep up anymore, and that's when they get diabetes. So she will always be diabetic, only (hopefully!!!) diet-controlled. We see a number of people who don't fully realize that and start letting their cat snack on dry food here & there, and unfortunately end up back on insulin.

Anyhow, hope you are feeling ship-shape soon. The flu can really wipe you out, ugh! Nice of Callie not to need shots and extra testing while you are sick... good kitty! cat_pet_icon
