Calculating carb percentage in food

Hi,

It is time for me to make the trek to the pet shop to buy more food. Lily is currently on Applaws tuna with mussels. I remember someone saying that this food is more of a moderate carb food and was just wondering how I would find out the exact percentage?
I have already looked at the food list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1J5JpMe6TDXrHq_aTl9hUtHy6Gs9oRBqlz4nPGKxtySA/pubhtml
The tuna/mussel flavour is not listed. I wanted to be sure of the carb count before I go ahead and pick a lower carb food.

Oh wow. 14%...HMM. I would never have thought that some tuna and mussels would be so high!
Hi Becka, you're right. It seems odd that this food comes out at around 14% cals from carbs, especially given that the only ingredients listed are 'tuna' and 'mussels'. Either the analysis figures listed are wrong (that certainly happens sometimes), or there are ingredients in the food that aren't listed (that happens a lot....)

What carb level are you looking for particularly? (I know that there's been some suggestion that it might be better to keep the carb level 'moderate' rather than 'low' in the light of Lily's recent DKA episode.)

I am apprehensive to change her now that she seems to be settled with this tbh

Yes, I can see that, given Lily's BG pattern, it could be helpful to stick to one food so that there's one less 'variable' in the equation. But I am amazed that she will just eat this one food! (None of my lot will eat the same thing twice in a row.... )

If, a little way down the line, you do decide that you want to try to some other 'moderate carb' foods, and want to be able to buy from a supermarket, then one possibility might be the Tesco's own range of Lily's Kitchen trays (note; these are not to be confused with the Lily's Kitchen organic range of trays which is widely available and is low carb). The Tesco LK foods range from about 11.5% to 12.6 cals from carbs. (And I know that they do contain carbs because I managed to squeeze that information out of the manufacturer....eventually..... ;) )

The Applaws foods tend to be very low in fat and low calorie (the 'tuna and mussel' has just under 6o calories per 100g). So any new foods that contain more fat may need to be added very gradually so as to avoid GI upsets.

I'm wondering, with her previous weight loss, do you think it would be beneficial to get her on something a little higher cal? Will try Lily's foods for Lily :). Also, I did post this on the lantus forum but....her numbers are better today, so just a general question. When clearing a bounce, is the polyurea and polydipsia normal? She just appears to have started peeing more over yesterday and today and wondering if that is simply because she had a bounce and her system is trying to 'get rid' quickly.

Lily's Kitchen organic range of trays which is widely available and is low carb ...
... and unless they changed the recipe recently the Lily's Kitchen organic tray varieties contain carrageenan. IIRC some (or maybe all) of the tinned organic range don't have carrageenan as an ingredient.

FYI Becka, carrageenan can cause inflammation.

Quite right, Mogs. The LK organic trays do still list carrageenan in the ingredients... I did (along with others here) write to them about the carrageenan, but just got told that it was only a very small amount, and was a certain type that didn't cause problems... But, as you say, it can be a cause of inflammation...

I do feel a bit disappointed with the Lily's Kitchen people. They seemed to start out with such high principles... I'm pretty sure that, in the early days, they said they'd never make a dry cat food, and (unless I actually just dreamed this or had one too many glasses of chardonnay one day) I'm also sure they actually quoted Dr Lisa Pierson on their website about the importance of wet food.... But then they brought out dry treats, and then dry cat food.... And then they signed up to this big Tesco deal, where they make slightly higher carb (and not organic) foods in very similar trays to the organic range, and sell them for just a smidge less... Hmmm.....
(OK - Rant over... ;) )

So reassuring to know that Lily's Kitchen think that triggering severe pancreatitis flares doesn't count as a problem. (I did notify them about the effect the organic tray foods had on Saoirse, BTW. I don't think they were one bit bothered.)

I agree that you are right to feel so disappointed with Lily's Kitchen for not living up to their original principles. Rant away!
