First of all, yay me! I got a sample by myself (yay Buster, too - he struggled but was a pretty good boy) :-D

Second of all, boo for a reading of 428!

Yesterday was my first day of home testing - the two readings I got were 33 lunchtime & 49 dinnertime. I had given him 2.5u with breakfast and he was fed M/D (as directed by the vet). I did not give him any insulin at dinner.

I'm switching to one of the low carb foods - Wellness turkey - so I only gave .5u today. If he tests high again at dinnertime is it ok to give 1u or should you give Lantus a few days to do it's magic?

+4 = 169
Fed small amount of Wellness Turkey

Hooray! I've been kicking myself all morning thinking I should have given him 1u since he was over 400, but now I'm glad I didn't. Hopefully the trend continues...

Give that .5u about 5 days to settle and for his shed to adjust...Ya he might run a little high for awhile but it is much easier to slowly bring his dose up than to have to try to go the other way.

WELCOME! It's better to give the cat time to adjust to the insulin and not change up the dose a lot. I've found that it takes time to fill the shed and let the cats body adjust. Glad to see you switched over to Wellness from the M/D. My Sam doesn't care for it, only one flavor. I feed him Fancy Feast, Friskies Pates, and Merricks BG foods. The Merricks is great but pricey. :-D

PMPS = 185 - WOOOOOOOOOHOOOO!!
Fed Wellness Turkey for dinner
No insulin given

Soooooooo happy! :-D What's the catch?

Seems if he's slowly going up in BG he may do a bounce tomorrow morning from having no insulin tonight. I'd test him before bed to see where he's at. I think you are playing a bit fast and loose with the dose. Seems you have been giving him a high dose then he tests low and starts to hypo. You were very lucky there. I'd start low and go slow. Give the 1U and stick with it for at least 3 days. Check out some other cats numbers and see what the owners do there. Good luck to you and Buster. Be careful and whatever you do, DON'T SHOOT a green number or below 100. :RAHCAT

Thanks Sue & Samwise - I am going to count this as a good day for now. Who knows what tomorrrow will bring? I'm not trying to be all crazy drastic, but that hypo episode certainly got me sitting up in my seat! Not sure I'll get another test in tonight as I am exhausted from the weeks events. I am setting an alarm to at least give kitty a small amount of late night snack to tide him over til morning.

If you get up to feed him you should test before the meal. You don't understand that your cat could have died from going so low! Read the stickies and print them out. There's a good one on low numbers and what to do if your cat hypos. Sam about did that a couple of times and it's scary to think what could happen. They can die quite easily and you wouldn't even know it. You need to make sure you have some high carb food to give if he goes that low again. 33 is a dangerous number. Keep vigilant!
