Well this was a little scary... I've had a container of Vet 10 urine test strips (made by Teco Diagnostics) for maybe 9 months or so, but the expiration says Aug 2013, so I figured they were still fine. Well this morning I managed to snag Sunny's urine, and it said all sorts of scary stuff, not the least of which was very high ketones (like as high as the scale goes)!!!
Actually, what's more accurate is to say that the initial color of the ketone square didn't change at all from its initial dark mauve / brownish color. Same issue with leukocytes, urobilinogen and protein. Everything else (including glucose - which read negative) was fine.
Anyway, I was all set to freak out when I tried one myself and saw that MY ketone, urobilinogen, and leukocyte readings did the same thing. I don't have diabetes or any reason to be in ketosis, so I'm 99.9% sure that somehow my strips went bad. It's weird because they've been closed tight, in a cupboard, not outside the given temp range.
I just have one question - is it possible for a cat to test negative for glucose and positive for ketones on a test strip? I'm still convinced these are bad, but curious anyway. Btw his breath smells fine and if this were accurate, his ketones would be off the chart... He's bright alert and responsive too - actually just had a nice play session with a feather teaser.
