Buffy has not been eating regularly since Friday night. No shot Friday night -he ate classic salmon yesterday morning and got insulin - last night wouldn't eat so no shot. Today he appeared to be eating so I gave shot. Then he left at least half of his food and is now hiding. I got some baby food - just meat and broth - and put some in a dish. Still can't find him. How long before I need to put the food in the fridge? I know he won't eat cold food. Any suggestions on handling this will he greatly appreciated.

i wouldn't worry about the food too much. mine doesn't get to sit out very long (thanks to too many kitties) but i would think it could sit out for an hour or so. if you'd rather put it in the fridge you can and then later pull it back out, add a tad of water, stir, and microwave it for 10 seconds or so to warm it back up. that will also make the smell stronger.

the bigger concern is kitty not wanting to eat. do you test for ketones? if so, i'd try to get that done today, sooner than later. if not, can you get some ketostix today and try to get a test in?

i'm on my way out the door to do my errands but i'm sure others will be along as they wake up

sorry to hear he's not been eating, but I wanted to warn you that not eating and no insulin could result in a very sick cat.

You had posted that the dose you were giving was 3units twice a day? Are you still giving that same dose, and can you post some of you home testing numbers?
Can you look around for him and test his BG, then post?
He could be sick, not feeling well, and could have very high or very low BG.

My Shadoe had issues with pancreatitis which is quite painful. She would hide and not eat. I treated her with giving fluids, and pepcid for upset stomach and also buprenex for the pain.

If you can test his BG and post the numbers, plus advise on the dose, it will be very helpful to others in suggesting what you can do.

Cats have a very short digestive tract so food freshness is not such an issue for them. Vyktor free feeds and his food often stays out for hours until he eats it. If you're in a very hot climate you can put a feezer block under it.

Any update on Buffalo? That sounds like a relatively high dose of insulin so I'm thinking he has high numbers a cat with high numbers and not eating is a big DKA risk (even more so with missed insulin shots) so I am concerned about your Buffalo.

Hi Susan,

It would be a very good idea to get Buffalo in to the vet ASAP to find out why he's not eating. Hiding is a sign of illness for cats. He may be in pain or feeling very ill.

I hope you can do that today. I and others don't mean to scare you, but we know the realities of feline diabetes and although it is a treatable illness, there can be complications. The faster we act to find out why Buffalo isn't eating, the easier whatever might be wrong for him will be to treat.

(((((Hugs))))) Please give as an update when you can.
