Budesonide question

Does anyone use the capsule form of budesonide from Wedgewood Pharmacy? I have the tiny tab form for Leroy at the moment but the pills are still pretty big so I have to split the pill in half and give both halves to Leroy, hidden in some food. It's not a big deal to split with a pill cutter but I do lose a bit of the pill (there's always some crushed up powder or teeny pieces). Maybe I just have a bad pill splitter. I was thinking the capsules would be easier in theory because the powder can be mixed into food but does the powder have a yucky taste to cats?

I’ve used the pills as well and the compounded liquid form. I agree it’s a pain to split the pills they crush very easily. The liquid form gives you more precise control over the dosage if you have to increase or decrease slightly. I always assumed the capsules would be larger and harder to administer, but curious to hear what Wendy says!

Leroy hates liquids going in his mouth so I opt for pills or injectable whenever possible. Or transdermal if that's an option. I wonder if the liquid can be mixed with a bit of food?

Maybe try mixing the liquid with some Churu? It's also possible to get a lot of meds compounded as chew treats. I am currently giving chicken flavoured pred chew treats.

Chew treats aren't an option. Leroy has a tendency to choke on treats, even his raw food sometimes. Oddball cat:p I don't think Churu sticks will sit well with Leroy's sensitive tummy. I was thinking of mixing the liquid in with some of his rehydrated raw food, let him eat that, then give him the rest of his food.

The chew treats I give are really small, less than 1/4 inch across. And they aren't hard. I was using Churu as an idea - I agree it's ingredients aren't ideal. I think there is at least one brand that sells a duck version of liquid treats.

I gave Neko her budesonide in a capsule loaded with a bunch of other meds after her meal, when it was pill form. When liquid, I also gave after. The only guidance I've seen is if your cat gets sick if given apart from food, feed it with food.

I just came across this post and am just wondering if budesonside shouldn't be mixed in food? That is how i give it to Howie in addition to his other compounded meds.

I just asked that same question to the vet's secretary. She'll ask the vet when he gets in around noon. The tiny tab pill turns into mostly powder when I use the pill splitter and I just mix the powder into his food which he eats all of. Any larger pieces gets hidden in a piece of NV Raw Bite.

The vet said that there's nothing wrong with mixing the crushed up powdered / splintered pill into food. The medicine will still work the same way. He said he trusts my judgement and that I should work at the vet hospital :joyful: I probably could too with my experience :D
