Not diabetes related-but you guys here are so knowledgeable ,thought i'd post this .
As of about 2 weeks ago, Buddy has a scratch (?) under his eye. it's about 1/2 an inch long by 1/4 inch wide.
any ideas what to put on it? i tried bacitracin but didn't change anything.
Thanks very much.

My kitty Carma got a claw to the eye a few years ago when her and Gus were play fighting. Her eye swelled up and was red. I know they vet prescribed an antibiotic eye drop, and I'm pretty sure - although I might be wrong - he put her on Clavamox. I'm not sure if your kitty has an infection though.

My at-the-time feral Bo came to eat on my porch regularly, and one day arrived w/ a huge gash on his tail and other battle wounds. There was no touching him, so I tried to "treat him" when I put food down and he was distracted. I took (I think it was) Benzine (?, anyways, the orange stuff you put on a kids skinned knee) and stood over him with the bottle as close to his tail as he would allow, and drip it over his tail. He didn't seem to mind it too much, and it stopped the oozing and infected-looking wound. The porch floor looked like it had blood all over it, but it washed off. :o

Since that time, Bo has been neutered (I'll save that story for another time), lets me pick him up, and has decided that he likes sleeping inside in a crate at night when it's cold outside. And he's extremely well behaved around the other cats - and friendly to the dogs. Never thought I'd see the day!

You might also try some neosporin.

A vet visit is in order. You really do not want to mess with eye problems yourself.

I would agree wholeheartedly - if the scratch was ON the eye. I have a veterinary opthamologist that has treated my dog (glaucoma surgery), four different cats w/ five eye ulcers, and checked over another who showed up with one blind eye. My philosophy is that I don't go to the GP for an eye problem - neither will my pets.

But if the cut is UNDER the eye, as I understood, the Neo will probably do the trick.

Hope it works!

NO......do not put Neo anywhere near the eye. If he should rub it or get it on his paw and then into the eye, it can damage the eye. There was a rescue kitten that when the shelter ran out of the eye ointment someone there put Neo into the eyes. It destroyed the eyes completely. Just clean it with some warm water and keep an eye on the spot.

May I suggest getting some of this from the vet:

Neomycin/Polymyxim B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Ophathalmic Ointment

You can use this around the eye as well as in the eye. Wonderful stuff!!!

Vetericyn will also work great on any wound or infection (ringworm too), and it is safe for use near the eye. Expensive but it's terrific stuff. I like the gel best since cats don't seem to appreciate having stuff sprayed in their face. :) You can get it online at Jeffers.

A few things here:

Ocular triple antibiotic ointment has been linked to severe reactions in cats. It is a very rare thing but this is the reason that most vets will prescribe Terramycin rather than neo/poly/bac. I know it's a long shot, but I will not use neo/poly/bac in my cats for that reason.

The other curiosity is that your cat's scratch hasn't healed in two weeks. That's actually pretty weird. So it is either already infected and needs a vet, or it is not "just" a scratch, or the cat has a health problem that is interfering with his ability to heal, or the cat is keeping it open by rubbing it or by re-injuring it somehow. Two weeks is a long time to have an open wound sitting on your face, so if it's really been such a long time I'd start to worry. The answer is not an antibiotic ointment as this does not make things heal, it can help prevent infection but it will not induce healing. So I'd consider having your vet take a look.
