Buddy just updated his pic. He just wants to say hi. His blood sugar is staying high even with 6 units per day. It was 519 yesterday mornin and his Mama is pretty bummed out. Buddys blood sugar was completely normal and even on the low side infact i wasnt sure the glucometer was workn right and took my own and each time my blood sugar was higher than his...But now that darn blood sugar is in the 300-400-500 range... i have spent everything i have and hes only 9yrs old and i dont want to put him down. He happens to be my family and i love him.
 
we have ways to make Feline diabetes less expensive, Lynelle. First diet. What are you feeding Buddy? Wet low carb food is best and can lower the blood glucose levels 100 points or more. A vet explains here: www.catinfo.org. Friskies pates are the cheapest low carb.

BUT be sure you are confident testing before you start switching over. A gradual switch is best to avoid tummy upsets, and to help you adjust the insulin downward as needed.

Hometesting is also a big money saver and the way to keep Buddy safe. It sounds like you are already testing? If so, great! Curves and tests at the vet are expensive and much less reliable than tests done at home.

What insulin are you using? What was the starting dose? It may be that Buddy needs a high dose, but sometimes high numbers can be because of too much insulin.

If you want, we can give you ideas on how best to use the insulin, how to determine dosing and test efficiently to find out exactly how it is working for him and how to maximize that.

Thanku Sue and Oliver. Buddy is getting Hills Rx diet canned m/d glucose/weight management. Hes 18 pounds and required 1 3/4 can/day. His starting dose of Lantus/Glargine was 1unit am 1 unit pm 12hrs apart...he is now at 3 units every 12hrs and his doc will have me do his curve this thursday and let me know wat they think.... Buddy has 2 doctors which we are grateful for. I have read the list of the friskies pate low carb so got to plan a transition from the m/d however have managed to get the m/d at cost 20 a case instaeda the original 43 bucks a case... thanku for ur reply.

You might also check out the Lantus forum. The protocol they use is very successful and is based on using the nadir, or lowest point in the cycle, for dosing.
