Buddy needs help

I'll try to explain the best I can. Buddy had check up recently and doing good other than dental work needed and is on waiting list on that. Saturday 4 days ago ate very little. Sunday morning lost all appetite. He was on 3 units at the time. I stopped his shots on Sunday morning knowing ( thinking) the right thing to do. No update on ss but his numbers have been in the 1's & 2' instead his normal 3 and 4's. He is drinking but not eating. Is it my Buddy's time? Need advice.

Hi.

I am sorry Buddy is not feeling well :(. It is very likely that he just needs to be taken back to the vet to get some labs repeated to figure out the issue and to determine the best treatment to get Buddy well again.

Unfortunately, even if he was seen recently and was fine, that can change. UTIs, constipation, inflammation of the pancreas &/or GI (to name a few) all can result in a cat not eating.

The concern is that if he has an infection that is resulting in him being nauseous and/or in pain and that is resulting in an aversion to eating & you stop the insulin, it can make the situation worse and increase the risk of DKA :(. Infection, not enough food and no insulin can result in DKA.

Are you able to take Buddy back to the vet today to get some blood work and see what is going on? At this point, it is necessary in order to figure out what is causing the problem and the best treatment to manage it.

Hi Steve

It would really help if you could put Buddy’s numbers in just for the last couple of weeks. By 1’s & 2’s instead of 3’s & 4’s do you mean 100’s and 200’s instead of 300’s & 400’s?

When did you last check for ketones?

And do you have an idea of the dental issues? Is it possible he’s not eating due to mouth pain?

I’m so sorry Buddy’s not doing so well right now but don’t give up on him yet :bighug:

Hi.

Are you able to take Buddy to the vet to get labs and find out what is going on?

Based on what you have shared, it’s been days that Buddy has not been eating and he really needs to be seen.

It is impossible to make specific “safe” recommendations regarding insulin for Buddy without knowing what his actual BGs are combined with the fact that he is not eating and there is an unidentified health issue going on :(.

While it can be dangerous to give insulin if a cats BG is low and they are not eating, it also can be dangerous for a diabetic cat to potentially have an infection, not be eating and not be getting insulin :(. This can cause DKA.

Have you checked his BG? Have you checked for ketones?

Again, are you able to take him into the vet today?

I'm not able to get to vet. Sad. He's numbers have actually be good to this point. Ketone test good. I fell so helpless. Every time I check on him I find myself saying my good bye. Me and Buddy wants to thank everyone on this site. It's full of knowledge and peace.

Please read Christie’s link above regarding ways to stimulate appetite because maybe one of those suggestions would help Buddy with eating. Sometimes if they develop pain or nausea from one particular food, they won’t eat it but will be open to another food—-even if it’s dry food. Bottom line is the cat needs to eat.

Do you have some alternative food flavors/textures you can try?

Also, I am not sure what the situation is regarding the vet but there is Diabetic Cats In Need that can help if there is a financial situation.

Since we don't have a full picture of what's going on with Buddy, I'm just going to toss out a couple of other questions; Which dosing method have you been following? If SLGS you're holding the dose way too long...

Also, there are no tests at night - often kitties do their best work at night. Still would be great to find out what else is going on, but without night time numbers it's very difficult to advise you to increase - although I don't see any numbers there that would go against increasing.

First things first though - have you tried all the usual recommendations for enticing him to eat? Forte flora, parmesan cheese, tuna flakes, crumbled kibble (yes, I know it's high in carb, but better a few crumbs of kibble if it'll kick start some eating)...there are others that people try to get kitties to eat - great advice given already above about appetite stimulants...
