I tried looking this up but I wanted to see if this was right. Bud was prescribed u40 proZinc. The vet gave me a script for u40 syringes, but the pharmacy I went to didn't have them and gave me U-100 0.3cc syringes. The pharmacies told me the 1 marking on that syringe would be the same, but it's not, is it? Do I need to go get different syringes? It looks like maybe I'm giving him too little insulin with these if I need to do a conversion. Help!

You are right the syringes aren't marked the same, but you can use U100 syringes with U40 insulin you just have to convert the doses.

Here is a link to Conversion Chart We suggest that you print it out and keep it handy so you can double check your doses each time.

The U100 syringes are really great for ProZinc, but as Mel said, using the conversion chart is imperative. With U100 syringes, you will be able to increase or decrease by smaller amounts more accurately than you could with U40 syringes. Glad you caught his mistake!

I just kept looking at the syringe thinking it looked like a smaller amount than I had used in the vets office when I was learning to do injections. Thanks to everyone here I had the knowledge to question it!

The diameter of the syringe barrel will affect how close together the markings are.

The U-100 syringe mark * 0.4 = the U-40 dose because the concentration is 40% of a U-100 insulin.

When discussing insulin doses with your vet make sure you give the dose in units of insulin, not how far your draw up the U40 insulin in the U100 syringe.
