Why?

I will be gone for 6 days and hubby's on his own.

At wat LOW point does he call the vet?

Man... was all excited at the 176 this morning. :?

Hi there

Since you are pretty new to collecting data, its pretty hard to know why he threw such a high number. The only thing different that I can see is that he had a lower than usual preshot number. Did you for sure get the insulin 'in' ?

Your question about low numbers is a different issue. Again, its hard to know what is usual for your cat and what isn't, but if your hubby tests mid cycle and sees a 60, then he'd better test again in 15 mins to see where things are headed. 50 is reason to be giving some food, 40 is danger territory at which your cat may or may not experience hypoglycemia and there may or may not be visible symptoms.

Thank you, Jan. I'll let him know.

Should I try to get her to eat now? That won't bring the number down, will it? It raises it?
Should I retest later?

If she doesn't normally eat now then no, I wouldn't, because we have no idea if the insulin isn't working or if the food would cause the pancreas to work or what...I'd just leave it. Some days, cats like to throw us curve balls just because. However, if you keep seeing wacky numbers then something isn't right.

And yeah, if you are around, test in awhile and see what's happening..one more piece of data :)

Thank you, again.

She went to eat on her own. Just a little nibble. Most likely less than a tablespoonful.

I'll retest @ +8

Our ReliOn is running about 15-20% lower than the 3 readings the Vet got on Dec 3 (when we first started insulin) Vet/Mine: 303/247 81%, 367/314 85%, 314/263 83%. I've read here that the lower the numbers get that they are more accurate with the ReliOn.

Do I trust the ReliOn at 40-70 or should I add 15%?

Idealy, I it would be better to get the vet's $230 meter and $$$$ test strips, I guess

Usually Beth, we tell newbies not to shoot under 200, but to wait 30 minutes and test again, to make sure it is headed up. Just for future reference - you certainly have a safe number at +6.

You can have hubby come on if he gets a low number and we will help. Also print off the hypo sheet and have it handy: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=15887

Also, it is a good idea to get some tests in after the evening shot. Some kitties dip lower in the night than during the day. Wondering what he was at +6 overnight if he was at 176 in the am?

I don't think you need the expensive vet meter. You just work with the one you have. I would say 95% of the members here use human glucometers. Accept its numbers and treat accordingly. 20% is not a big difference. You would normally treat the same on either side of the number - 20% either way.

You can just work with the numbers your meter is giving you. Since you are looking for a trend, and a little bit one way or the other isn't going to matter that much.

But I use the Relion and it gives me very good numbers on the low end of things. Even with humans meters have a +/- 20% allowance. My mother is a diabetic and I have compared my relion with several of her other meters and we have always been within that 20% margin (using both mine and my mother's blood). Not sure there is any home meter, animal or otherwise that can be completely accurate. I may be wrong but out of 4 meters I haven't seen one yet.

"we tell newbies not to shoot under 200, but to wait 30 minutes and test again, to make sure it is headed up. "

OK, I understand the reasoning. If, after 30, it is up, do I shoot?

I'm afraid I don't have time to train hubby to use this .. leaving tonight... but I'll try.

GF!!!! I printed that sheet, highlited the 'emergency' stuff, laminated it and put it on the fridge before we did the first shot!. Got the Karo on standby too ;-)

Thanks, Mel... I really appreciate the positive feedback on the Relion. Felt like such a cheap skate that I didn't buy "the best" for her!

LOL... poor hubby was trying to test last night, got it all laid out, put the pen down to load the meter and then lost the pen. He tore the great room up looking for it for about 20 minutes. Our Papillon had taken it and chewed it up. Rush to the drug store for 2 new pens!

Great, the sheet will be a good guide. Why don't you just teach hubby how to use the forum and have him come on to ask if he has any questions. You know how we love to help......

Yes, you could shoot after the 30 minutes, if his numbers are going up. The reasoning is to be sure the kitty is headed up, not down. If he is under 200 and heading down, you can get into scary territory by shooting. If he is headed up, you should be fine. Once you have data on how Bud Bud reacts to insulin, you can shoot lower numbers. Just not in the beginning.

The one and only time I had to leave hubby with the kitties, I put together everything he was going to need in one spot. I got one of those little plastic carryalls (looks like an open toolbox) stuck in the Karo syrup, oral syringe, high carb food, etc in that. Gave him an "In Case of Emergency" list of phone numbers, vet's, where I was staying, my favorite vet tech's etc.

All the directions on if he tests and gets this number do this, if this number do this etc. I'm lucky mine is computer literate, but I also knew in a panic he wasn't going to think about jumping on here, he would just panic. Is there anyone that you can leave your husband a phone number of that in case of emergency he can call? Vet, Vet Tech anybody?

WOW Mel! just looked at Max's SS. WTG!!!!!!!!!! Very impressed here :D

LOL on the "just teach hubby how to use the forum".. he gets home at 5 and I gotta leave town tonight around 7! Gotta hand it to him, lthough, he HAS done really well with the testing and shooting.

Fortunately, the vet is open to 7 and on sat nad sun and is only 1 mile away.
We are VERY fortunate that we have a young woman (who is diabetic herself, no insulin) that comes every day that I work and lets the dogs out around 1. She just stopped by Saturday and vaccinated all the dogs, too. Gives all her horses all thier shots. So she knows how to test and how to shoot. we took her to the initial visit for the insulin Friday, too.

I've asked her to test Bud Bud, if she can, when she comes.

Just called hubby and told him about the under 200 and about the 70, 60, 40 readings. I'll post it on the fridge before I leave. I'll leave all the numbers with him. He can also get me on my cell within 45 min., but I won't have computer access at work.

It sounds like you have it covered. I bet hubby will surprise you. My husband really got into the technical side of this whole thing - the numbers and the doses. He found it a challenge.

Hope your trip is fruitful. Be looking for you when you get back.

Thanks hun,

But Max pretty much came here broken...lol I had very little to do with it other than giving him a home to call his own, a good diet and lots of love.
