Bud was very lethargic most of Saturday and all day Sunday. Very "not herself"

Took her to the vet this morning. She was dehydrated and running a temp of 103.7. They gave her 120u SubQ and a shot of antibiotics and 2 weeks of liquid antibiotics for home. They also did an ultasound. The ultrasound showed a bit of irritation in the pancreas, a thick wall around the liver, liver itself was good, slightly large kidneys (could be normal for her) and no visible tumors.

They wanted to run blood, urine and urine culture which was a bit of a drain on my budget after all the rest of it, so we will wait and see how she's doing and, if not improved in the next 2-3 days, take her back in.

The plan is to continue to shoot 0.40u.

Did you find it Beth? It's on Dr. Lisa's site:

Adding 1-2 TBS of water (plain or flavored – such as tuna water, clam juice, chicken or beef broth) per meal is also very beneficial, as is using water fountains. Make your own tuna water by taking one can of tuna and mixing the contents into 3 cups of water. Mash it around and let it sit for ~15 minutes. Pour the water into covered ice cube trays. Freeze to prolong the freshness. Use covered trays to keep the water tasting and smelling fresh.

Hope Bud feels better.

Yes, thank you, Sue.

Thought there was a direct link to it off the FDMB.. just goodled "dr. lisa tuna water" ;-)

Don't have any tuna in the house and I'm so exhausted from staying up til midnight to test Bud and then back up at 2am (+5 +7) and then back up at 6.45am to test and shoot.... going for a nap :D. DH can get it on his way home.

Bud's much more perky :D

Oh, they tested and there were NO keytones

Beth- lots of good thoughts for you and Bud! I hope he's feeling back to his old self soon and they figure out what's wrong... And that it's something easily remedied!

Did they mention anything about pancreatitis?

The temp is not a good thing - hopefully the ABs will help.

I'm not sure if you are doing it already but I like to recommend always adding a little water to the wet food. It should be much softer but not soupy.

What's wrong?

Had been making it soupy for the night but now adding tuna water to it to make it just moist and leaving bowl of tuna water out.

Banana flavoured anitbiotic for a cat? sheeesh.. this have any sugar / carbs in it?

She was feeling WAY better yesteday!

haven't seen her this morning... DH did the shot. I'll go look. time for her AB anyway

Update: She's wonderful. not dehydrated. very nice elasticity to her skin. playful. very alert.

Good news! So glad Bud is doing better. I agree, what's up with banana flavored AB's for a cat? Really? Banana? No one ever heard of tuna in that place? lol

Every time my kitties have had abs they have been the banana flavored ones. I thought it was kind of odd too. You'd think that if they were going to flavor them they'd use a flavor a cat would like.

I hope Bud's feeling better! Tell us how she's doing.

awww beth i've been so busy with tom and learning the lev i did'nt even know budbud was not feeling good.
hope the worst is over and she's all better now.
(((((budbud)))))

My vet sends me to a compounding pharmacy that has great flavors like chicken and tuna. I thought all vets did this.

Thinking of upping dose to 0.50u. Promised vet to stick to the 0.4u for a while.

I know her being ill can mess with the #s... so, if we don't get some movement by Monday, I'm seriously gonna want to up it to 0.5u

Comments/thoughts/suggestions always welcomed.

Antibiotics can increase bg levels, too, can't they? Hopefully someone will come along who can tell us if that's right or wrong. If they can increase bgs, I don't know if you should change the dose to compensate for that or not. Boy, I was no help at all! Sorry ;-)

I genuinely don't know about ABs causing issues with the BGs.

It looks to me like you are [hopefully] testing enough to capture a reduced insulin need if you up the dose.

The pattern that come to my mind with cats that have illness issues are just numbers all over the place - high and low. The high carb pattern I think of is frequently more of high numbers then crashing then more high then crashing. LOL I'm not sure if that makes any sense. So maybe the relatively consistent higher numbers over the past could days are a sign of a stronger Bud?? I don't know just hypothesizing.

I remember Joanna talking about how long it took for a dental procedure to have an effect and I think it was like a couple weeks? So I think that coincides approx with with the ABs would be over and the pain gone.

Sorry I don't have any solid answers for you.

Seems to me that if the ABs are causing the BGs to go up, then why not up the dose to compensate? When the numbers come back down, so can the dose. But that's just my gut reaction, not science or experience.

tom's back on ab's after being off of them for 8 days. i never heard of them raising #'s...if anything i would think they would help lower numbers as infections have a way of raising them. right?

I had no science backing me up. I thought I had heard that somewhere, but if no one else has, I easily could be wrong.
