? Bryant’s Numbers sill fluctuating!

I still looking at Bryant’s numbers being all over the place. I have tried to get some random tests in, mid cycle etc. I’m having difficulties getting a good curve due to a changing work schedule the past few weeks! I’ve maintained his 4u dose for now. My vet wanted to start him on 5u a week ago but I stayed at 4 as I was worried not being home to test / monitor him at another dosage increase. Also I’m thinking the random mid cycle numbers could be skewed by him eating too close to when I test him? What is a good plan of feeding / testing to get accurate curve numbers! It’s almost been 2 months on PZI and not seeing what appears to be any consistently in his progress.
 
When a kitty is in high numbers like this, it needs more consistent dose changes. It's not good to hold at one dose for this long. Bryant does need more insulin, but if you go from 4u to 5u you'll likely cause some bouncing. Instead increase by 0.25u every two days, unless he starts to bounce and then hold for a little longer, but not for weeks at a time.

It looks like maybe you come home at lunch to test? Is it possible to vary when you come home so that some days you might get a +4, and others a +7, etc.? If you can vary at what time you get the mid-cycle tests, then you don't really need to do a full curve as the numbers will fill in a clear enough picture.

Don't worry about the mid-cycle meals as long as they are low-carb. When Bryant gets into lower numbers or if we start to see a lot of bouncing then there are some things you can do to finesse the eating patterns, but at this point it shouldn't matter too much.

It might be helpful if you post every few days to have someone look at the progress as you do those increases. We are more than happy to help sort out what's going on and help you do the increases while still keeping Bryant safe.

Could you remind us what he's eating these days? Both any foods, and any treats, he's getting? You can also add that to your signature if you don't want to keep repeating it for my poor memory ;)

He’s only getting low carb 10% or less FF and Friskies pate, no treats. I’ve been trying to feed him as often as he’s hungry!

One more ? How do you tell when bouncing is happening? Also How do I deal with my vet on this plan from the counter advice I get on here?
 
Well, I'm confident that you'll get to 5u, you're just going to take a couple of extra days to get there, so I think you can just wait a few days and tell the vet you've raised the dose. ;) Or does the vet see your spreadsheet?
 
Vets can't recommend small dose increases because Prozinc is only sold with full unit syringes. And they are bound by liability issues. My vet has never had a problem with me doing it this way - he just can't recommend it himself. He did give me a little side-eye when I switched to u100 syringes and started converting, but he really can't argue since I have the healthiest diabetic cat in his practice. :cat:
