So heres a little history on my kitty, Panther... He lived with my parents up until January of this year and was fed a low quality kibble and was somewhat overweight. He is about 11 years old. He moved in with me in January and shortly after got a UTI from the stress of the move. We took him to our vet who diagnosed him with a UTI--and diabetes. Went through the typical frequent and expensive trips to the vet to figure out a good dose of the insulin they prescribed for him, Lantus. They also put him on the Hills prescription diet kibble for diabetic cats. Finally we settled on 4.5 units a day, twice a day. I was determined to get my baby into remission... So after a few months of prescription kibble and and Lantus and still having excessive urination and thirst... I turned to the internet where I scoured this forum for answers. I bought a Prodigy glucose meter (All I could afford after all his merchandise I'd purchased from the vet) and a package of fancy feast wet canned food (His favorite). We went on our merry way with the methods recommended here and got him down to 1 or a half a unit per day and he stayed in the 200-300 range most of the time. I was pleased! We were managing his diabetes cheaper and better than the vet did!
So we moved again this summer and shortly after Panther decided it as a good idea to get into his sister's dog food and gorge himself into a bout of pancreatitis that nearly took his life. Another expensive and very emotionally draining experience. Once he got home from his long stay at the vet, home recovery was difficult. His glucose bounced around from dangerously low (a scary night of monitoring and maple syrup) and extremely high (The meter wouldn't even read how high it was--just read "high") and everywhere in between. Finally, he was regulated again and had made a full recovery, reading 100-200s with 1 or a half unit twice a day. However, the past 4 days, he has been unusually low--with NO insulin. The first night he read 73, so I didn't give him any insulin. The next morning, 80. Since then he has been hovering around 70s-80s. This seems low to me and very unusual for not receiving any insulin??? I'm glad his glucose isn't soaring, but I'm somewhat concerned... Should I be worried that my previously diabetic cat is now reading low-ish with no insulin after a bout of pancreatitis?
I know this was a novel but I know it helps to have all the information... Thank you guys in advance. Like I said, you have been helping me already and I have been reading threads for months. Just now do I have a very specific question that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Has anybody else had this experience?
