Milo got a green last night. He was in the 60s. This morning for first time in over a,week we were 547 and black. Figure a bounce.

His numbers had been fairly stable for a few days prior. This second bounce this week. Is this c a sign to decrease or increase. Will do a +6 at 1230pm.

Thanks

since the 63 was at +4, he may have gone lower --- did you give Milo some food when you got the 63? giving some medium carb food can slow down the drop and prevent a bounce.

Have you considered trying Lantus or Levemir? I think you would get better duration -- my favorite is Levemir. Another option to get better control would be to shoot the PZI every 8 hours (reduced dose)

Oh, is the Prozinc U40 or U100? (just thinking about the difficulty of measuring this dose in U100)

Yep, he bounced. I agree that food would help slow the drop and smooth out the curve. I think I'd drop the dose a smidge - I am thinking he most likely he went lower later. That might also smooth out the curve.

I wouldn't be in ahurry to switch insulin. You haven't been on ProZinc all that long. And I feel strongly that bouncy kitties bounce until they stop bouncing. The last two cats who switched have bounced at least 6 months with the new insulin. (Lantus) They finally settled in but my guess is that they would have settled in with ProZinc in that amount of time. Check out their spreadsheets (Jen and Eddie and JenM)

Phoebe, we use U 100 needles with ProZinc U40 with a conversion chart.

Thanks.
He was 147 at +5.5. He did eat at the 60s drop. When he was in remission he ate about every 3.5 hours. Small meals.

I will go down a little tonight and keep at that dose for a few days.

I'm with Sue. Bouncy kitties sometimes just need some time to settle down. I think he will in time. Going down a bit might help to keep those drops from being so large. That'll help smooth out the numbers probably.

He can still eat small, frequent meals if you want. My kitties all grazed all day, including my sugar kitty. I would have done some smaller meals throughout the day, but I wasn't home to. But if you can, sometimes giving 3-5 small meals a day instead of 2 large ones can help give the pancreas a boost and help things heal better. Just a thought!

If you can do it, a way to deal with bounciness is to not have him swing so much is by shooting TID, or every 8 hours. This gives ProZinc doses some overlap in effect.
To do this, you would total up the day's insulin, and divide by 3 to get the dose done each time.

I gave him a slight 1.25 shor 630PM. I plan on setting feeder so he can eat about 130AM.

BJM I didn't know I could do 3 shots with Prozinc. I might try that after a week of the slight 1.25 to see if that helps. So to do right if I figure about 2.4U divide by 3. I'd give .8U every 8 hours if I decide to try that.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

It can be done with any insulin; you just need to vigilant in monitoring to see how it works for your cat. And if you need to switch back to BID, you do it cautiously.

Another tactic that can be used is called Split Dosing, where each shot is divided into 2 and the 2nd part is given 2-3 hours later (but always a consistent amount of time). This is most useful if the non-depot insulin wears off before the 12 hour time period. You must be committed to vigilant mid-cycle monitoring for this until you learn your cat's patterns.

A third tactic, more common with the high dose cats (acromegaly, Cushings, insulin auto-antibodies), is to use a supplemental short-acting insulin to help get very high numbers down quickly so the basal, depot insulin can do its job better.

BJ, I think she just started ProZinc in December. I would certainly be cautious about doing much other than TID. If you want to see a spreadsheet of a TID cat, check out b00kworm. You can search under Members or in the back pages of this forum. (there are zeros in the middle of her name but with this new software, it doesn't look like it.). Lisa tried TID at first and it worked well, then was able to go back to BID. The last she posted he was on tiny doses. It took awhile but he is looking great.

Milo was 336 this AM. I gave the slight 1.25 again. I'm going to test at 1230 which will be +6 AMPS. I'm going to go from there for tonight. I thought I'd stick with the slight 1.25 for a few days and try and get a curve on Monday when my house gets back to normal.
Then if it looks like he'd benefit I'll try the 3 a day which I could monitor closely for a week before I work.
I will look at b00kworm ss.
thanks
