well, I just woke up, two hours late, Im about to go into panic attack mode because I still have a ton to do, I lwt my kid cry for two hours, just slept right through it because Im so tired. I had to give Boots some food, still havent tested him yet because I had to get my daughter fed and him fed and get myself showered and calmed down first. Im really having doubts about this after this morning. I'm so tired already, and neglecting all the other things that have to be done. I am just stressed out.
 
Obviously you needed the rest, so it's all good.

You can go with plan B... Just get a test when you can. If over 200, then .5u?

Never mind. I just read the other thread and you gave a shot five hours ago. So just test him when you can.
 
I will be testing him in a few minutes. I didn't want to do it right after he ate, and he was a hungry boy this morning. He meowed at me for the first time in days!!

Is Gabe still good with testing later? He can test around 5:30, feed Boots, and give the .5 shot if Boots is over 200.
Make sure he knows what a tiny dose like that looks like in the syringe.
 
yes he is. He was with me this morning during the early AM test and shot (he has to leave the house by 530 for work) so he saw how much I gave him, he should be fine. I will be texting with his as much as I can at work while he does it, but I think he knows pretty much what to do. And yes, I missed his little voice terribly <3
 
also how do I feed him now that he is on the insulin and eating like a regular cat again? I gave him half a can of wet food this morning, but I dont know if he ate it all or if my other cat came up and stole what he didnt eat.
 
189 is great. You won't need to stress out at work all day.

We usually feed at both shot times. And then you can feed at any other time you want to. The only time frame we don't advise feeding is in the two hours prior to the the AMPS or PMPS tests. Those tests should be "fasting" numbers where food isn't inflating the numbers.
 
what does AMPS and PMPS mean? And eactly what should Gabe do when he gets home? I told him to test blood at 530, if its over 200 to feed him his half a can, wait 30 mins, give him a .5 shot, wait three hours and test again. And if he is under 100 like before, to give him a tablespoon of the gravy food and test again in an hour.
 
AMPS is the AM pre-shot test. PMPS is the PM preshot test. The tests you do at shot times.

The plan you detailed for Gabe is great.

Well he's been fed, I have to go to work, I left Gabe a written detailed plan and also told him he could ask you all questions if he needed ( I just leave this logged in at all times right now lol) and he can call me at work so hopefully all goes well til I get home tonight. Okay y'all, so I just got home and this is how today went with Gabe and Boots. He tested him at 530pm. BGL was 459. He fed him, gave him .5 insulin. Tested again at 915pm, level was 236. He's hungry, can I feed him? Should I test him again? Thanks :)
 
Yes, you can feed him again. A diabetic cat will act hungry most of the time, simply because they don't get everything out of a meal that a non-diabetic would. Their systems aren't running at 100% efficiency. We just try not to feed in the two hours or so leading up to the next shot. Other than that, they can benefit from multiple smaller meals much like a human diabetic would.

The numbers are not terrible. Less excitement than last night for sure!
 
As far as testing him again. It's data, so it's useful. But I'm not expecting a dive to low numbers like last night at this point in the cycle. So you don't "need to" test again.
 
Gotcha. The biggest issue we are having at the present time is that when we poke him with the lancet, it's taking multiple tries because we aren't getting enough blood. Right now we are using 30g. Is that too small? And if so, will a bigger gauge hurt him? He is fine the first and even second time we attempt, but if we have to do more (and usually do) he is furious at that point. So mad he doesn't even want the treat he gets when we're done.
 
The meter I bought came with 33g lancets. It was impossible for me to succeed without multiple pokes. I went to walmart and bought some that were 26g, if I remember right. I was able to get blood in one try almost every time with those. As far as "hurt"? I don't think they really cause as much discomfort or pain as we think they do. Try poking your fingertip with one. Yeah, you feel it, but not "ouch, that hurt!" pain. And a cat's ears have less nerve endings than the tips of our fingers.

30g is pretty small. Maybe try some 26 or 28 gauge? On a good note, once I'd done the ear pokes for a while, Bob's ears bled a lot more readily. Eventually, I was able to succeed every time with the 33g lancets that I saved. Your technique will also improve over time. Last week, I tested Bob for the 1st time in a full year to mark his 2 year's off the juice anniversary. With a 33g lancet, I got blood on the first try. And Bob didn't fuss at all.
 
I have been using his paw pads instead of ears, so I don't know if I want to go as low as 26. Maybe Ill go pick up some 28s on saturday. Im going to leave him alone as far as testing tonight. He isn't very hungry, but he isn't acting funny, just hanging out in the living room licking his paws. So we will just test at 530 am again and give him .5 at six after feeding him some food.
