7:30 am fed 3/4 cup Royal Canin DS and 1/2 can tuna, 8 am 5 units, 2 pm (+6) 213, 6pm (+10) 330, 7:30 1 1/2 cans SK, 8 pm pre shot 373, 8 pm 5 units, 9:45 (+2) 419. Boots doesn't like his ears touched so it was tough to do this, I needed help holding him. He had ear mites and was treated for them for 10 days so doesn't trust me yet. Otherwise, the testing was easy and the lancet doesn't hurt when I stick my finger. I am going to continue this to see what happens since the food change. Does it look like the insulin is working? From what I read the numbers look pretty high. It's hard to tell how long he was sick since I've only lived with him since Feb. and I have no way to know if he was being treated previously or was lost or dumped or what... No one responded to ads for lost cat. I've been giving him insulin for 35 days after starting at 1 unit and going up a unit about every week to 10 days (per vet instructions). He loves the canned food!!! Do I test for 24 hours at 2 hours apart? It may be hard to get somebody to help me in the middle of the night. Off to a good start? Thanks for any comments you may have.

looks good, your job for now is to collect as much data as you can so we can get an idea of what the dose is doing for Boots. It's a pretty high dose, so your other job is to test as much as you can so we can be sure he isn't going too low.

FYI, here is a better way to write the numbers so they're easier to read, until you get a spreadsheet:

4/10/10
AMPS ~ ??? (did you get a reading here?) (5 units)
+6 ~ 210
+10 ~ 330
PMPS ~ 373 (5 units)
+2 ~ 419

I'm so glad you adopted Boots. I hope nobody dumped him, but some people are so bad. I don't have advice, but wanted to stop by and say "hi". By the way...the spreadsheet is REALLY easy to set up. There are instructions in the "Tech Forum" and it really does help visualize everything.

Thanks for the positive note. I will use your suggestion of writing the results tomorrow. Boots is so happy today and jumping around it's hard to believe he's sick! I did find and am using the spreadsheet but don't understand computers well enough to move it around. I'm going to practice doing this alone. We'll see what happens at midnight.

just wanted to stop by to say hello and welcome to the group!
looking forward to seeing the data you'll be collecting. hope to see you posting often!

There are also instructions in the Tech Forum about how to attach the SS to your signature. You will probably need to go into the User Control Center to create a signature, as well. If you are running into difficulty, there are people on the Tech Forum who can lend a hand. It's not all that difficult.

If Boots really objects to having his ears tested, you can wrap him burrito style, in a towel. If all attempts at an ear poke fail, there are people here who will test on a paw pad. Gabby is fine with ear testing so I've not done this and can't offer any advice. If you need to figure that out, I'd suggest posting a question over on the Health Board.

Welcome to LL! Looks like Boots found a good bean to take care of him ;-) Just wanted to stop by and say Hi, hope to see you around....posting and asking questions.

Welcome to LL :)

4 tests in the first day!.. doing better than I did.. think you'll have this under control in no time.. the testing does get easier with practice.. he'll get more tolerant of it and you'll get faster at it.. the freeze dried treats (when you find a kind he really likes) work wonders.. only give them at test time.. he'll learn to associate nummy treats with tests and put up with more than you would have ever expected ;).

My cat hates her ears being touched.. so bad that I poke and scoop the blood up immediately with little piece of a drinking straw (new piece each time) and test off of that.. to limit the amount of time touching her ears.. "milking" is still a no go for her.. she'd rather I poke her a bunch of times than milk her ear at all.. but she volunteers for tests.. comes and yells at me if I skip a "usual" time.. she's a pretty stubborn cat, but she has improved.. after many months instead of swearing when I hold her ear I get a big "huff" and a squeek :).

Do Lou has had a history of allergies in his ears and just will not tolerate me touching his ears so that is how I ended up paw testing I have tried since in the last month and nope just cannot do ears so its just something for you to fall back on in the event the ears do not work out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdUqsCUAyKU&feature=relatedhere is a link that shows paw pad testing and good luck with Boots you are doing great others will be able to give you better advice about your numbers
