Hello all...

I am going to go on craigslist to see if I can find some Lantus we can afford but so far this is just becoming too much, I am just too stressed, too upset, and getting no where, with (and this is just how I feel) people I do ask for help thinking I don't know how to dose my cat, or maybe that I don't test (which let my pocketbook and the cost of strips assure you all that I do test!), but with the cost of the insulin and having to pay for the office visits for the vet to get a script for the insulin, it's just too much. Wondering if anyone would want to adopt BooBoo that can afford to take care of her. She has been diagnosed since Jan of 2011 and that's when I did some online research and found this board which was a great help back then especially since the vet tech had told me to give her 1 CC instead of 1 unit at first. You all taught me how to self test which I now do like a pro with only 1 poke and to test her urine for ketones which I do as well. I also switched her from Humulin to Lantus as per your suggestions here. We have been on a good role and the two stressors are when it comes to figuring out how to get more insulin when we are almost out and also when I go to get her syringes which Walmart almost always gives me a hard time cause it's for a cat that I have no diabetic card for. I am really upset and fed up and if I come off as angry I'm not totally just angry but rather feeling super stressed out and like I'm being treated like a newbie who knows nothing, when trust, I have put sooo much time and energy into this little cat. So just wanted to put that out there. I appreciate any help. Thank you...

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

I'm sorry you're feeling so stressed and upset, Stephanie. I wish I lived closer to you, so we could hang out, and I could help you more. For right now, I'm just giving you some cyber moral support.

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

There are no listing for Lantus to anywhere near my house. The only thing I found that looked promising was somewhere about 3 hours from where I live...

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Did you contact Diabetic Cats in Need? They might be able to help. It is sometimes overwhelming to deal with FD.

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

I did, but we are kinda having an issue with each other. I guess I felt they were kinda rude and made me feel like I don't know how to take care of my kitty, and then they felt I was rude in my responses when actually I just felt belittled and stressed, so I guess I probably did come off as rude-ish. I don't know what to do but I am now on the phone with my mom and crying my eyes out.

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Stephanie:

I'm wondering if you let your vet know that the cost of office visits in order to get a prescription was breaking the bank, if your vet would back off of the unnecessary visits. Gabby has been on Lantus for 3 years and the only time she sees the vet is for her routine check ups (barring any other illness). She calls in the prescriptions to my pharmacy. While it may not be your biggest expense, it sounds like every little bit will help.

There may be links to discount coupons for Lantus in the Supply Closet. Also, if you've not posted on both Health and Community, those are both resources here on FDMB.

(((Stephanie)))

Along the lines of Sienne's post, if you have to take her in to get the prescription (which I think is rather outlandish but that's just MHO), ask them to give you enough refills to last at least a year. There's no reason they shouldn't do that.

Where is Antelope Valley in CA?

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

That might be something I can talk to the vet about. Plus taking BooBoo to the vet stresses her out and I try real hard not to stress her out. That's a good idea, thanx!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Talking to DCIN again in hopes that we can get back on the right track with each other and I apologized for anything that came off as rude...

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

I'm sorry you are feeling so stressed out .. I'm not sure who made you feel like a "newbie" but I am sure that was not their intentions .. Everyone here has a goal of keeping diabetic cats in the homes they know and I'm sure they were just trying to help you figure out some things .. It's hard being so stressed and so broke and so upset .. we've all been there :YMHUG: Just take a deep breath and maybe a bite of chocolate :-D

I don't really have any other suggestions since the craigslist posting fell through .. I'm sorry to hear it was so far away .. Do you have a sams club or a costco warehouse nearby? I have heard they sell single pens and you don't have to have a membership to use the pharmacy ..

Give booboo extra hugs and kisses tonight .. I'm sure she can sense you are upset .. hang in there, it will get better!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

We do have a sam's club and a costco. Do you know how much they charge for a single pen? It's kinda hard doing this if I have to pay like $50 each month right now because I too am on medications that cost $60 a month now and between the two it's gonna get quite expensive around here. Can't wait til I am done with school and we are a 2 income family!!!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Not all places will sell a single pen. It tends to be on a store-by-store basis. It's a pain, but you need to call around and find out. Frankly, I think if you were to tell a pharmacist you're a poor, starving student and the insulin isn't covered by insurance, maybe they'd break up a box. At least in my area, the outpatient pharmacies at some of the local hospitals will sell a single pen. Hospitals are often breaking apart the boxes for the patients in the hospital so they are more likely to have the pricing done by the individual pen and they are already in a situation where the pens are out of the box.

Stephanie,

I think that you are doing a great job, and I am glad to see you are getting some good suggestions here. Please check your PM's.

I told Walmart that and they could have cared less. It was pretty darn upsetting. Many places around here do not sell single pens. I called and went to most all pharmacies with no luck and was able to find one walgreens that had 1 single pen. That was a few months ago...

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Have you tried the Kaiser hospital? Some outpatient hospital pharmacies will sell the single pens.

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Just called my pharmacy I go to for my medications and they also do not break up the 5 pack

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Unless Kaiser's policy has changed, they do not break them up. I had Kaiser up until recently and they said they did not do that when I asked them...

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

The problem is that even the single pens are expensive and right now we are financially very strapped until about Sept when I get some school money and when that comes I will probably buy a 5 pack and be done with this for a while!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Stephanie,
I am buying a box of lantus from someone on Craigslist here by me (hopefully they show up). I would gladly give you a pen once I figure out how to send it.

:-D :-D :-D ...LL never ceases to amaze me!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

I'm just here to offer moral support. But I agree about the vet visits for the prescription. That seems outlandish.

If you buy syringes online, you don't need whatever card that was you were talking about. That might help.

Can you put an ad up on Craig's list saying you are on the lookout for Lantus? It is free to do and you "warehouse" an extra pen or two.

Don't give up yet. I understand the stress. I really do. We all do.

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Im kinda freaked out about the whole buying of a medication on craigslist. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but can I get in trouble for doing that? Like I said, probably a lame question, but just wondering... confused_cat

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

I would think probably not since there is someone else doing it, lol!

Re: BooBoo Kitty AMPS 161 Might need adoption

Don't take this as gospel but I don't think you can get into trouble for buying Lantus. The person selling it could possibly get into trouble for dispensing medication. However, the loophole may be that it's for a cat!. Lantus does not have an indication for veterinary use. However, Craigslist has to be aware that this is happening. If it were illegal, ostensibly, they couldn't do it. (Of course, they have people selling various and sundry "services" and it wasn't an issue until there was a newsworthy event, so who knows!!)

I asked my brother-in-law the same question about buying insulin on craig's list. He is a lawyer. He said there should be no problems with buying insulin - as he said, it's not like you are buy crack. I told him to stay by the phone on Saturday just in case. He laughed and said that his fee goes up on the weekends - got to love family...lol
