On Dec. 23, I attempted to post about Bogie's Fructosamine and CBC results, but I guess it never got posted. On Dec. 23, Bogie officially started his honeymoon although it had already been over 2 weeks since he had received any insulin. His BG at the vet this past Monday was 96 and his fructosamine results were perfect. His vet told me to spot check once a week, but in hindsight that was a mistake. Bogie was on a carb free diet (Young Again Zero Carbs) and he was looking a acting great. Then on Tuesday something was wrong with his ear and by Christmas day he had developed a huge hematoma in the pinna of his ear. After a useless trip to the ER on Christmas, I went to see a vet the following morning who drained his ear and started him on several different meds. He chose to use an antihistamine for his ear itching rather than a steroid and put him on Tresaderm drops for his ears. Bogie has to wear a hard E-collar to prevent him from scratching his ears. Yesterday I did a BG spot check and Bogie's BG's were 385. I figured some was due to stress, but still I gave him 1 shy unit of insulin. Since then, he was been tested several times and his BG's have been between 265-407. Bogie was back at the vet this morning for a second draining of fluid. Vet feels that Bogie caused the hematoma b/c he was scratching his ears and shaking his head (ER vet said same thing, but did nothing). While stress does have a bearing on his elevated BG's that is not the only thing at play here. So after nearly 3 weeks of good BG levels, Bogie is back on Humulin N. I really thought the diet would do the trick for a longer time.
