Bloody stools need help

Tabby has a history of diarrhea and I ams lamb and rice solved that problem for years. Than for even more years he has been on Friskies flavors that contain brewers rice and still had solid stools. Recently it appears they have changed something about Friskies. Tabby has been having diarrhea again and some blood in his soft stool. I have been giving him acidopilus tablets to help. The ingredient list still shows brewers rice but who knows what they are doing with the food. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other brands that contain brewers rice in them? I live in a rural area so I will probably have to drive 2 hours one way to buy anything unless it can be purchased online. Please take the time to help if you can. Tabby has had fd for years and this diarrhea has just started up with the formula change. He likes chicken and turkey flavors best. Also not sure if Iams Lamb and rice canned food is for sale anymore.

Thank you very much
Alice and Tabby

Poor Tabby. I don't use any food with those ingredients, so I am no help. Just wanted to stop in for a hug.xxx

Food changes can result in diarrhea .

But blood in the stool can indicate more serious problems.

Bloody, loose stool was Mr. Kitty's indication of bowel cancer.
Not to scare you, nor borrow trouble, but you may need a vet
visit on this one.

I really think it could be the formula change as they told me they changed it after I called them. And there isn't anything I can do about cancer. I am going to try I ams and pray for the stools to harden up. I know you guys will be pulling for us. Thank you Karen for the advice and hugs right back at you V.

Another thing that can cause bloody stools is infected or impacted anal glands. Although it is more frequent in dogs, two of my cats have gotten it in the past. The first symptom was blood and a pussy like discharge in their feces.

I have only see them in a dog but I can see Tabby's butt and I don't see any swelling at all. I am starting the Iams tonight and I hope to see an improvement in a day or so. It worked pretty fast the last time we used Lamb and rice. And it's like he wants me to know what's going on because he doesn't cover them up. He usually does but with the bloody stools he doesn't. Probably another reason but I am glad he leaves them so I can tell whats going on. I will be watching him and the litter box close for the next few days.

Unfortunately with the anal gland problem you can't see anything externally until it is really swollen or ruptures. If the diet change gets rid of the bloody stools then you could probably rule that out.

I noticed in your profile you are in Maine. I grew up in the Portland area and have my bachelor''s degree from USM. I couldn't deal with the cold weather anymore but I miss the summers and falls there.

Another possible cause of bloody diarrhea is intestinal parasites, coccidia in particular. It might be worth having your vet check a fecal sample to look for any possible parasites.
