My Henry, who is now 2, i just discovered blood on his anus, fresh blood and prolapse. I rushed him to the vet. She gave him Buprenol and pushed it back in, a stool softener, Lactulose, to use 2x day for 2 weeks I think and some dewormer--Drontal. I've had him for more than 1 1/2 years could he have had worms this whole time?

what else could it be? He is not in any pain it seems.

thanks
Martica

The prescription of a stool softener may be for constipation, as well as to reduce the chance the prolapse re-occurs with normal excretion.

Are his feces normally soft or would you characterize them as hard?

If it is a constipation issue you might want to look into miralax as a permanent additive (after the 2 weeks on lactulose) to help prevent to problem reoccuring.

Well I have too many cats to know who's poop is whose! I'm going to have to try to catch him in the act--not easy. Yes, that is what the stool softener is for. But I was wondering if there could be any other reasons than worms why this may have happened...seems so odd for such a young and, I thought, healthy boy.

Actually, Henry has been getting 1/2 raw ever since I started giving it to Sebastian to control his diarrhea (which it did). Henry has always been the least crazy about the raw, I wonder if that's why. I'm going to try NOT giving him raw and see if that helps. Poor baby.

It happened again this morning to Henry and his prolapse was worse. He is at the vet right now. She is going to do an enema and maybe a stitch to hold the prolapse in or something. I had no time to even research this procedure and not sure it's right, not sure I trust this vet. My poor Henry. He def. was constipated. I think it must be the raw food--too much bone/calcium. :(

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about Henry. I hope he gets better.

With the raw- did you incorporate it slowly or make the change at once?

Poor Henry sending healing vines. Hope the surgery goes well and a diet change off the raw fixes his problem. I haven't heard of prolapses in cats but in chickens bred for factory farming it is not uncommon and can be a little tricky to fix because the eggs (or in this case poo) keeps coming. In my experience the vet procedure has been the same though - try putting it back in to see if it holds by itself, if it doesn't add a stitch and hope it holds when the passage is next used.

I hope Henry is doing better. That would worry me, too. Just wanted to add that they can have worms for a long time without us knowing. My 4 year old had them and she had been treated as a kitten, and has been indoor only since we got her at 4 months. She had tapeworms, I never saw them near her anus. She would vomit a lot and had really greasy/spiky hair which I attributed to other things. Anyway, i do hope Henry is on the mend!

Thank you...he is better. The stitch will come out on Thurs and so far things seem ok. I have not caught him pooping but presumably it's been happening and he has been trying to lick it and got his head cone off one time but pretty much he is not aggravating it and is ok with the cone. Poor sweety. I've stopped giving him the raw food in case that was causing constipation and presumably the worm medication may have caught something if he had that kind that it treated.

I now have to catch him in the act for a stool sample so we can double check.

I hope this doesn't come back, poor baby.
