Hello all...
I am looking for a blood pressure machine... used... pricing... for my Gumpy girl... does ANYONE have any idea where??? I have searched and cannont find anything!!! tytytyt in advance

Bell I am guessing those are EXPENSIVE! for a feline one.
If you score one please let me know how, where and how much k?
I wish I could have one for Tom as his heart is enlarged and I would love to keep track of his bp.
Hugs dear Bell,
Lori

Please be aware that it is VERY difficult to get an accurate BP on a cat.

Make that "cats and small dogs". It is much easier to get an accurate BP on a large dog.

I would not purchase any oscillometric monitor (the ones shown on the ebay link) for use on an awake cat. This is based on comments from the cardiologists on VIN.

This is an issue that is brought up on VIN almost on a daily basis. We all wish that there was a more accurate way to measure the BP on an awake cat or small dog. At this time, the best that we can do is use a doppler (not oscillometric) machine but that takes a lot of practice and can be frustrating to use on an awake cat....and....they are usually at least $900.

Dang this iPad....the way that I posted my last post...it erased the one before it.

Drat.

Bottom line? Save your money.

Dearest Dr. Lisa,

I remember when Giz's regular vet got his new and very expensive BP machine. I was enthralled with the little purple tail cuff until the machine declared she didn't actually exist. Then he moved the cuff to one of her legs, and then another. Still no reading... Then he put the cuff on Elena's, vet tech extraordinaire, finger. Then he put it on his own. Still no reading... Then he got out the manual. Then I offered my thumb, as it appeared I was the tallest person in the room, and Giz was clearly alive. It seemed like the size of the cuff... Apparently I was the only one in the room who was faintly alive...

He called me a couple hours later to confess the last time he used his new and very expensive BP machine, it was set for a large animal, not a cat. I thought it was fairly interesting that I faintly registered as a large animal... And, my thumb isn't that big... Then again, I do come from a tall gene pool...

The most interesting part of all of this BP testing business was Giz. She just calmly watched the cuff moving from finger to finger from the comfort of the baby scale her vet always put her in upon entering the examining room and after exiting her carrier because it kept her calm. Giz never cared a crap about her weight...

Dearest Bell,

Please know we continue to hold you and Gumpy close in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

My love and hugs to you all,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

ty for Lisa and Deb....
I know trying to use one, if I could find one would be a task in itself... I am soo frighten for her as they have her on a very high dose (Norvasc 2.5mg), she gets 1/4 tablet every 12 hours.... and starting Tuesday, they are also going to have her on Atenolol 25 mg. - she will get 1/4 tablet once a day.... We have also started this past Friday pm, on Tumil-k (potassium) which does not say the mg.. she gets 1/4 tablet once a day.... The emergency vet gave me Benazepril 5 mg and she was to get 1/4 tablet once a day, but the new vet is not giving her this now.... The new vet also gave me some Phenobarbital 16.2 mg and said if she had another seizure, to give her 1/2 tablet. I could even grind and rub on her gums if I needed to............Sure seems like ALOT of heart meds for bp, and not know what it is except in a hospital setting....

The emerg. vet did come to the house, once on a monday approx. 5:30 and her reading was 114.... with doppler, and then again on Wed., same time and it was 190!

We did the ultra sound on her little heart and on her belly area this past Thursday, and her heart musles are very thick, and her bp was 190 average there and heart beat was 240~

We found out that one kidney on the left was smaller than the other and said that could have been like that since birth but does not help her in her later years....thyroid test has been done and all is well there.... said she probably has had high bp for all her life!

We are hoping the potassium meds will help and she will stop walking around like a zombie, and acting as tho she does not see things, and that everything is new to her! just terrible! They also said that she had lymph nod enlarged and we are to watch that for now, no explore surgery til the little ticker gets dialed in..

She is eating Royal canin renal lp...dry she likes some, the wet she HATES!!! Could someone please help me try to find some wet that I can buy for her that she would enjoy??????

ty for reading my post, still wanting to be able to check her bp at home!!!! Wish it was as easy as getting a sugar tester!
Mom to sugar Bean, civvie Slappy and my new found heart patient Gumpy!

How is Gumpy doing?

I haven't been on this board in a long while and just did a search on blood pressure monitors, so I hope there aren't more recent updates I've missed.

I hope she is doing better.

I am also looking for a blood pressure monitor for home use. Did you ever find one?

I purchased a cuff on ebay thinking it would be simple to just use with a human one, but the cuff tube doesn't fit on it.

Anyway, hoping things are going well with you.

Kristi :)

p.s. just searched on Gumpy's name and saw that you were asking about phosphorus levels in food. if you go to this page and click on either wet or dry food it has lists for most brands. http://www.felinecrf.org/diet_and_nutrition.htm

Hello all,
And, no I have not found one yet.... so if anyone else has please let me know as Gumpy had another seizure - small but she did on Sunday.... Would have really liked to know what the bp was.... feels like giving insulin without testing first.... I gave meds not knowing anything! :?

Hi Ohbell, Really sorry to hear Gumpy had another seizure. I had a kitty with seizures too.

I'm still trying to find a way to home monitor, I will let you know if I find something.

I bought a cuff on ebay that fits but the slip tube is too small for a home human monitor so back to the drawing board.

Larry and Kitties thanks for the ebay post. i didn't see the one for $90 ... i wish I had marked to be notified of posts, I missed it.

The others are a little hard to tell... the one I want says you have to be verified as being in the healthcare profession and that they verify ...

When I give Shimmer his benazepril it seems like he gets high blood pressure. i just cut the dose to 1/8 tab. have no idea if it's helping or harming him.
I have to give it though, he lost an eye to high blood pressure.

Anyway, we will figure it out soon hopefully and let you know. :)

Hang in there Gumpy and Mom. xoxoxo

I understand this and we are all in the same boat with wishing that there was an *accurate* way to monitor BP at home but you guys are wasting your time and money going down this road.

Please keep in mind that NO information is better than INACCURATE information.

Just think about a faulty glucometer causing you to give inappropriate dosages of insulin.
