blood glucose home testing

Hi, all,
My ms bee was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago with diabetes. She's been to the vet a few times to have her blood tested, but the last 2 times were unsuccessful. I want to learn how to home test and was wondering if there is anyone in my area (southwest Nassau County, New York) who would be willing to show me. I'm at a loss here on what to do since she does not like to be held and DEFINITELY does not like a trip to the vet......
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated,

I'm in Nebraska but I will cross post for you over on our Community Board and see if I can round up someone in your area that can pop in and give you some hands on help learning to test.

Have you seen the videos on testing a cat at home? There are a couple things that come to mind to try until we can round someone up to help in person. If she doesn't like to be held ( I have one like that, likes to lay by you but not on you) What I do with him is I just sit on the bed next to him, he loves to be brushed, so I start out giving him a good brushing, then when he is all relaxed from being brushed, reach over get ahold of his ear and poke. The other way is to wrap Ms. Bee in a big bath towel like a kitty burrito so only her head is showing and then test her while she is all wrapped up, you could even place her in a chair or on the couch and use your leg and the arm of the chair or couch to help you hold her in place.

Home testing is the BEST thing you can do for your baby! My Bean is a lap cat - only when she wants in the lap, but what helped me with testing was special treats - only for testing... picking a spot for testing and testing every time in that spot - chair. I would invite her to my lap, offer a treat or 2, pet - paying lots of attention to the ears off & on - warming with rice sock, love words, a few more treats. Do you think that ms. bee would sit in your lap for wonderful treats?? Bean will, but once it is done, she wants down. I dont think I could get her to sit there if I were not offering treats.

When I received my test kit, we would sit in our spot, and I would do the whole routine w/out the lancet in the pen. I wanted her/us to get used to the routine before I actually stuck her (ok, momma was scared! :shock: ). She got to where she knew that was pokey poke time and would get those treats if she sat there and was a gooood girl during testing. Momma and Bean got better and better.

I purchased a relion meter from walmart as the strips are the most affordable. Lancets at a good price and so are the u100 syringes. I also use the walmart brand of neosproin w/ pain ointment.

I am speaking in past tense as she is in remission and we have not done insulin since 5/24!!

Diet, home testing and advice from here is the reason why.

I am sure someone can come and offer hands on training for your ms. Bee.

What type of insulin are you using? What foods are you feeding right now?
