Blood and clots in urine

Hi everyone,

Riddick's 5th day on insulin and I thought all was going as well as it could be right now. Last night I noticed his urine was tinged a bit red and this morning there are clots in his urine. I have an appointment to take him in tomorrow (the soonest they had open) but I'm wondering if anyone has had this type of thing happen to their cat? Is this possibly related to his diabetes or being on insulin now?

Thanks for sharing any insight or experiences you may have had!

He may have a UTI or crystals. If he tries to urinate and is unable to, you need to get him to the vet immediately. He may have crystals blocking his urinary tract and that can be dangerous.

I second the UTI or urinary crystals. My Alice has had bright-as-ketchup-red urine in years past, from UTIs and crystals. It’s not diabetes related, but an infection in a cat with diabetes can wreak havoc, and I would encourage a vet visit ASAP as well.

Any strain in the litter box, taking a long time, or only being able to urinate small amounts at a time (or not at all), these could all be signs of that, basically like a human UTI.

I would make sure kitty gets a lot of fluids until you can make it to the vet. Expect the vet to check for signs of infection by testing blood or urine, and expect an antibiotic if UTI is suspected by the vet. If crystals are suspected, there may be additional medicines to help break the crystals up.

I hope Riddick is feeling better soon!

Or it could be just inflammation of the bladder with no (sterile) infection. My Patches used to get that (clots and red-tinged urine) in the past. At first I was worried and and took her to the vets. After that I just treated with pain meds and subQ fluids.
