I posted this on the Prozinc forum. I have been frustrated to see Fern high since his dental. I *might* now know why. He was giving Convenia as the antibiotic. I obviously didn't know enough to think to say, nope I want another. From what I can tell this can be reflected in higher numbers for a while. Will it be for the full 60 days it's in his system. What else can/should I possibly expect. I know his numbers today are very flat compared to his normal reaction to insulin.

I feel like we just took a mile of steps back on what I thought was going to be a big step forward.

I've not heard that Convenia raised BG.....the problem with Convenia is IF your cat is allergic to it, there's no way to get it out of the body and you could be in an extended fight since it takes so long to clear

It's also not really for dental problems in the first place...it's main use is for skin problems. Dental infections usually require a different type of antibiotic that works well in the mouth

What most of us have done is have our cats charts marked VERY clearly with "NO Convenia/NO Metacam" so the vets don't automatically just use it

A dental isn't a "quick fix"...it can take awhile before you start to see results from it (in the BG)....it's only been a few days...give it some more time :bighug:

Oh I know, I wasn't expecting a quick fix. I also wasn't expecting higher then when I was giving 1.5 units and a kind of flat line I got today either though. That is why I'm kind of freaking out. A search here does show it can raise BG. Now I'm trying to figure out what if anything I need to do in regards to the higher numbers. I also called my vet and said don't ever give this again.

China's had two dentals...both times I was hopeful that it would be the extra "push" that would bring her dose down even further....both times her dose went up

Usually, the dental will help, but it's not 100%.....but the nice thing is at least you know that his mouth is healthier now! Dental disease can cause all kinds of problems other than just raising the BG

I don't mean to sound like a smarta** here, but if there's one thing you should ALWAYS expect with FD, is the UNEXPECTED. I've only been on his forum just over a year, but it's been my experience thus far, that sometimes NOTHING makes sense.

I noticed there were 5 extractions done during the dental. Were post-dental xrays taken to make sure/double check there weren't any teeny tiny bits of tooth or root left "in there"? If not, that's the first thing I'd have done. Unfortunately, it happens all too often. It can result in high BGs after a dental... when post-dental xrays haven't been done.

We should ask the elusive Mr. Murphy (Murphy's Law) if he'd like to be a member. Then we can ask him :mad:why in the Hades he has such a perverse sense of humor.

Even before I found the FDMB, I knew that after her dental surgery, Dottie would probably yo-yo as to BG.. because she had multiple issues that would now go away. Why didn't my vet 'get it'? Why did he bomb her with a sizable dose of insulin when he had no clue as to how her body would react with so many rapidly changing variables? "Don't Ever Do That Again"

Sad but my vet (dental specialist) wanted to give Menace Convenia after her dental too. You'd think they'd know better but I'm guessing it's a convenience thing since so many cats can be hard to pill. I advised Convenia was NOT an option pre surgery and got an alternative in pill form. Better a bit finger than long term medication issues in my books!

My old vet gave Squallie Convenia twice in two months, without my knowledge (until after the fact). I thyank my lucky stars he had no issues with it! His new vet knows that NONE of my babies are to get Convenia, EVER!

They did take post x-ray. His number this morning was still higher then I wanted but unlike yesterday he did react on his usual patter with his +5 number at 164. Yesterday he never dropped more than 100 points which is what freaked me out and made me look at the bill. I gave a fat 2.5u but feel comfy if over 400 I will go up to 3u tonight without issues. If he is sub 400 he will stay on 2.5. Yes he's on Prozinc so a sliding scale is ok with it. I would say he is likely having at least a mild reaction to it, he stool is softer than normal but not diarrhea.

As I explained to the vet (yes I called), I would prefer to pill or liquid because I am uncomfortable with the if something goes wrong we can't do anything whereas with a pill if there is a reaction you stop giving the pill. I get that some cats are hard to pill. And in fact if it comes to one of my civvies I might end up using it, but I would like to try other shorter term options first. In the vet's defense, they are located in a high end area, I think they get a lot of customers that would favor the shot. I think that's why I'm getting frustrated with them. Most of the time they are excellent but at times they well aren't
