I just rescued an (alleged) 9 year old girl cat and her brother from the kill shelter on Monday night. It is Sunday morning.

She was unspayed and so the shelter spayed her on Monday before they let her out. I picked her up Monday night from the shetler and she was doing pretty great--surprisingly mobile--although she has had a large lump on her belly. The size of a golf ball and she is a tiny cat (6 pounds, not really underweight, just very small). I did an internet search and that could be normal. It does not look infected or bruised or anything, just a weird big lump. It has not appeared to bother her, she jumps up and down, etc.

She also came out of the shelter with a cold. I wanted to avoid antibiotics becasue she'd just been spayed, had vaccines and was stressed but her sneezes got worse and she has now been on 4 doses of Clavamox (2 days) since Friday afternoon.

She had not been doing well--very congested, sneezing wheezing a bit. Not as sprightly as she was on Monday and Tuesday compared to Thurs and Friday and Sat. It is now Sunday morning and I got up early to give her her meds. I gave her tuna food mixed with pepcid (she has vomited slightly a couple of times since the Clava) and she took that, and I also gave her Nutrical. Then I gave the clavamox dose.

She was resting afterwards and I just picked her up and there was a pool of blood that came out of her butt I believe. It has not continued but it was quite a bit.She seems ok, not feeling great, lethargic but not in apparent pain. I wiped it down but she also groomed her leg and butt herself. Not sure if this is an emergency or what. No more blood.

Don't know what to do. Googled it and there was something about ruptured anal sacs possibly. Also spoke to a fellow rescue person who said that one time a cat she had spayed had the big lump and it was excess blood that had to be drained--but from the lump---NOT coming out of the rectum--don't think that would happen.

any ideas/ She is resting comfortably, I'm going to go back to bed with her, but then have to be out for a few hours to work. Not sure if this is an emergency or not.

The lump is not that abnormal. It happens sometimes. A worm compress a couple of time a day helps.
Seeing more than a little blood on feces could be serious. I would contact a vet.

Are you sure the blood is from the rectum and not the vagina? If it is from the vagina, that may be some bleeders from the spay that should have been tied off.

Is it bright red, dull red, or closer to coffee grounds black?
The later is suggestive of GI, due to digestion of the blood.

Alternate hypotheses:
The Clavamox may severely irritating her GI tract, causing bleeding. Would be dull to bright red depending on location of irritation.
The colon was punctured during the spay.
Some other problem exists in the cat.

Best you can do is keep her quiet, monitor, provide supportive care, and if possible, wait until Monday to get to vet.
If signs of difficulty breathing, walking, fever, dehydration, etc. I'd go to an emergency vet.

Thank you.

Well I took Chloe to the vet today.

First she aspirated the lump and some fluid came out. She said it could be a hernia--intestines poking thru the suture internally and we'd have to keep an eye on it. But the fact that fluid came out was good at least because it could ust be that.

Then I found out that the shelter records had noted that when they opened her up to spay her, she was pregnant. So they aborted the kitty embryos. Poor girl, so it was a more serious surgery than we realized. And she was shockingly not in pain and active in the first days after it, even the same evening.

Soo the vet thinks the blood probably came out of the vagina (I have no idea, thought it was the butt hole!) and since it has not come back she said it could be a left over blood clot coming out or somesuch.

She's feeling like utter crap because she has a terrible terrible cold, very congested and not eating and the Clavamox is making her sick I think. But she is mobile and appears to be pain free as far as her belly.

So, we'll . I feel so terrible that she can't breathe. Giving her subQ. Trying to feed al ittle bit. Dreading the next Clavamox dose since she and her brother hate it.

thank you!! you all are a wealth of advice.

An infant nasal syringe bulb may be used to gently suction mucus from the nose if she'll tolerate it.

Baring that, make like mom cat and use a warm, wet washcloth to soften and wipe away mucus crusts.

Humidity may help loosen up dried mucus too, and help it drain.
