Just wonder if I should sit tight on the 3 units for a few more days, or drop it down a little more? Thanks for all your help.

I think you could experiment. You could go down to 2-5 - 2.75 and see if you get any better numbers. Or you go up to 3.25. Either way, you should learn something. We hope - his numbers do seem to be all over the place.......That one day you got the nice amps - any ideas about food fed that day or treats that day that might have been different from other days. Or even food patterns? Was he fed more smaller meals or fewer meals. Anything you can remember?

What are you thinking? Regardless of your decision, glad you are testing for ketones regularly.

Darlene if your ready to give him a chronic rebound test then lower. and even by .5 but test like a curve. and give it a 2 day try.
If not and you want to go up (i'm not yet convinced, he did not do well on 4u) again, test like a curve.
me? i prefer you drop dose and test.
and i'm usually the higher dose pusher so i think this means something

My thought is to go down to 2.5 again. I think I panicked to soon and started raising the units earlier in the week. I believe he may have been getting a lot of the fish varieties of FF. I remember you told me only 2-3 times per week and he LOVED the fish varieties. He is eating more boiled chicken and broth the last couple of days....I try to look at food patterns and see if I can see a correlation. I know his numbers are all over the place and it's a bit confusing. Thanks for the help!

is it your homemade broth or canned or boxed broth...those can have things that are no-no's...like onions...or even CARBS!

I lean toward lower too. It may be that BJ ends up at a higher dose, but, since you're new to testing, it would be nice to see how he does on the lower dose first (look at all the possibilities). Can't remember if we've explained what a glucose curve is so sorry if this is repetitive. A curve is when you test pre shot and every two hours after to the next pre shot (6 tests). It allows you to see how the insulin is working on your cat (e.g. when it starts to work, when the nadir (low) is, how fast the #'s go down and then back up or if the #'s stay flat). All that data can help give clues to what the dose is doing and if it needs to change up or down. A mini curve is testing more like every 3 hours. Paws crossed for BJ.

The fish varieties tend to be very low carb so that may have helped with the lower numbers. I would hunt through Janet and Binky's charts and find the lowest non fish carb types and see if they make a difference in your numbers. Is the chicken your low carb snack? If so, it should be fine. You might try the tuna water rather than broth and see if that makes a difference. Even if homemade, wonder about the skin from the chicken? We usually say unskinned meat, boiled or baked with no seasonings.

We just want to give you lots of options. You never know what might make a difference.

If you're interested in experimenting with even lower carbs to see if that makes a difference (some kitties are more sensitive than others), Blue Wilderness (aka Buffalo Blue Wilderness) High Protein, Grain Free wet cat food is supposed to be 1% carbs (chicken, turkey, duck). They have different types so make sure you get the high protein, grain free. It's more pricey than the Fancy Feast, but I believe Donna found somewhere online that sells it for 88 cents/can. Anyway, you could pick some up at the pet store and see if it makes a difference before deciding and ordering online.

We have been buying the Wilderness Chicken cans online by the case. It was the first wet food that Asher the sugar cat and Alby the civie will both eat. Alby was very addicted to dry food. The Wilderness canned is between 1 and 2% carbs to my understanding.

I have been going to the cheapest place online to buy, and that seems to change every time we order. The prices seem to change like a commodity ;) We order as many cases as we can get into the cheapest shipping. Last time we ordered 7 cases from petfooddirect.com and it came out to 87 cents per can including the shipping. Way cheaper than the $1.47 per can we last saw at Petco. But obviously I’d buy couple cans at the nearest big box to make sure your cat likes what you pick cat(2)_steam

Wilderness makes a couple flavors, our guys like the chicken and will eat the turkey. They won’t touch the duck. Who knows confused_cat

I switched the dose down yesterday evening and am having some interesting results! It's looking promising and I have fed him this morning and then have held off on feeding him this afternoon. He seems okay with it for now. I only give him boiled fresh chicken broth, but it is skin on chicken. I haven't given him any of that today. He was drinking a ton of water this morning, but seems comfortable now that his glucose levels have dropped some. I will follow up with the cat food when I go out a little later. Thanks everyone, I'm somewhat encouraged today!

Yes, he is surfing right along! Like yellow much more than pink. Let's see if we can keep this dose for a few cycles (unless you get a low number....)
