I'm attempting to normalize Alex's dosage of Novalin N, after the roller coaster last week. This morning, he was 270 pre-shot, so I gave him 4.5U as I did the previous day. (Vet had upped to 6U last Sat, but due to lower numbers I am not following that.)

Here are his numbers this afternoon:

+5 149
+6 84
+7 58 - fed him 1/4 can food due to low number
+8 56 - fed him 1/4 can food due to low number

I'm watching him closely because of the low readings. Should I give him some high carb food or karo syrup to boost his number, or still continue to watch him until it rises?

I usually advice to test every half hour when in that range of numbers. I don't think you need to give high carb right now, because the BG number only dropped by 2 points in the last hour, so it looks to me like the dropping numbers have just about slowed to a stand still and will probably start to rise soon. I would just stick with the low carb food and test again in a half hour.

The N insulin should start wearing off shortly and the glucose heading up. He's not low enough to feed high carb. Just monitor and let the low carb food balance him a bit.

He was 68 at +9...78 at +10..139 at +11. It looks like he's out of the woods now.

Obviously, he won't be needing insulin tonight. It's going to be a few weeks before I can get him on Lantus. I need to manage him on the high side until then.

I,m thinking that backing off a hair on the insulin might be a safe thing to do.

Maybe drop 0.25 off the dose?
