BG still around 200

Hey all,

So my cat Twink has switched to Hill's M/D dry, I'm TRYING to get her to eat Fancy Feast low carb wet, but she just doesn't like it much (trying all sorts of trickery). She has been totally off her old high carb food for 2 days. She was diagnosed last Thursday at BG of 226. I've been testing every night when I get home from work (she usually doesn't eat around that time). Her numbers have been since then in order: 230, 210, 218, 195, 209, 215. I'm also thinking of trying Wellness core dry, but that only improves carbs from 14% of Hills to 11%.

How long should I wait to see if diet only is making a difference? She's also still being weened of her Prednisolone steroid, 1/2 her normal dose a day, today we start doing 1/2 dose every other day.

I don't know that much about remission, is it easier to start them on insulin and then get them OTJ or to never start it at all?

I am not sure what you are feeding. If you are feeding Hills MD dry, it is not low carb. lt is 13% carbs. We try to feed under 8-10% and with a lo carb trial like yours, I would aim for under 6%.

Have you tried crumbling up the dry and mixing it up into the wet? Parmesan cheese or tuna juice on top? This sounds silly, but sometimes feeding her off your fingers will get her eating the wet. If you can get her to eat all wet lo carb, you may be surprised how her numbers will go down.

No easy answers on how long to wait. But in your case, coming off steroids and not yet on wet lo carb, I would continue a while longer. Get on all wet lo carb and continue testing.

Yes she's on Hills M/D. I've tried mixing shredded cheese in with FF low carb wet food, that didn't especially work. Had a small break through yesterday when I soaked it with a lot of water, she licked it for awhile to get at the water. But overnight it disappeared, so that's a good sign. I'm going to try both the tuna juice and parm cheese this weekend. Is it a bad idea to take away the dry food entirely, so when she's hungry she'll be forced to eat the wet? I just heard it's so important for diabetics to eat so I didn't want to completely take away the dry while she IS eating it.

I just read that the steroids can stay in their system for 2-3 weeks, so I guess I should keep on with the low carb trial. It's just worrisome that postponing could be damaging her pancreas even more and making remission less possible.

You do want her to eat so just keep trying things to see if they work. Some people swear by FortiFlora. You can get it from your vet or the vets at PetSmart. It is a probiotic but has the flavoring that is in dry food that they like so much.

It is difficult to know whether to wait or not. One of the considerations is that at the numbers you are getting, you would need to start with a minute dose and watch very carefully. She is not high and doesn't have a long way to go down. You don't have the "luxury" of getting used to the whole process with higher safer numbers before you have to potentially deal with low numbers.

I've been going through the transition of weaning my cat Max from dry to wet food. Not an easy task as Max loved, loved, loved his dry food. If I'd only known how high in carbs it was. *Sigh* We just went to only wet this week after a couple weeks of mixing the two types of food and his numbers are already improving. He still needs coaxing but the tuna trick has helped. Also, I have found there are certain flavors of low carb Fancy Feast he does not like but Classic Chicken Feast is a fave. Good luck!
