BG Reading Confusion

So, I just did my +6 test on Toby and got two different readings (it was a difficult session!). After pricking him twice, I got some of his blood on my finger, so tested that and got a reading of 245. As I was cleaning up and getting the Neosporin for his ear, I noticed he had a large dot of blood on his ear. It took me two strips, but I tested directly from his ear and got 427. I would say roughly 45 seconds-1 minute passed between the two tests. Would his stress levels create that big of a jump in such a short period of time?

I lowered his dose from 1 unit to .50 this morning and since he didn't eat more than a couple of bites of his wet food this morning, I left his dry mix out which I saw him eat a few pieces of twice. I'm not surprised he didn't drop much from this morning, but I wouldn't expect it to climb that much. I'm new at all of this, so any help would be appreciated!

If you wanna be sure than take a third test. If the drop was really small it may have read it too low.

Is it normal for cats to lose their appetite when first starting the insulin? He picks a little here and there, usually more so as he's nearing the end of his cycle.

Meters are allowed by law to be way off and getting different readings within seconds is not uncommon. Make sure you always have fresh batteries and be thankful we even have meters or insulin.
I use a human meter that require a microscopic amount of blood but if the strip doesn't fill up completely I'll do the whole thing over again. This will all get easier, I (kind of) promise.

It does get easier, for both of you! Have you changed his diet? Or introduced a new flavor? Idjit being Idjit doesn't like tuna in anything. Sticks his nose up at any combo, and this cat is a food vacuum cleaner. Is it hot where you are, or something really different going on?

I have been feeding him exclusively FF pates and I’ve been adding a little water. He normally liked the pates, but preferred the higher carb FF lines. I picked up some lower carb Friskies pates to try tonight with him. He took a few bites this morning and quickly lost interest. He ate more yesterda

While I would like to eventually get him completely off dry, I’m going to try to do it slowly so he doesn’t have stomach issues on top of all this. I’ve been mixing the Purina DM slowly with his old Purina One Selects. He picks at this throughout the day and night, but there’s kibble left in the bowl from yesterday whereas he used to polish this off. Once we’re over this hump, I’d like to slowly eliminate the dry altogether.

It is extremely hot at the moment here in Louisiana.

Maybe try a little FortiFlora on top

I think FortiFlora might work. I'm going to call around to see if I can get it locally right away. If not, I'll order online.
