Hello,

Is anyone aware of a chart per say, that has ranges for a sugar kitty. Not to record the numbers I get but just to get an idea if I get a 120 if within normal ranges. Or if I get a 420 how to look for signs of hypo and hyper.

Note: Numbers are for human glucometer!

< 40 at any time = HYPO; initiate hypo protocol asap

40 -50 well before nadir = CAUTION - kitty heading to hypo; steering the numbers with food may be needed; be sure hypo supplies are available

50 - 120 = non-diabetic normal range

> 120 = Daily tests for ketones recommended, especially if prone to them. If not eating, and infection, mandatory test for ketones Get veterinary apt if infection suspected.

> 150 at nadir = follow your insulin's protocol for dose adjustment

> 240 = renal threshold exceeded; glucose spilling in the urine

I would say that any reading below 50 requires immediate carbs to bring up. If below 40, use karo or honey. In the 40s, use wet food, the % carbs depends on how your cat reacts to food.

I would also recommend testing for ketones regularly with a diabetic cat, even if the numbers are in the normal range (50-120 on a human meter). How often depends on how prone to ketones your cat is and how high the numbers.

Just my $0.02 worth.
Liz
