Hey Guys,

I have been out all am and have not had a chance to check Louie's BG until now. He is 15 mins past due for his Insulin and his is BG is 444.

Should I up his dose a bit or leave it at 2?

Thanks,

Laura

Let's leave it at the same 2 units this morning and see if that's a 'bounce' from the longer string of lower numbers yesterday.

Edit to add: (wanted to get that above posted quickly) I just used your spreadsheet to see that!!! THANK YOU for setting that up - I know you've got lots on your plate right now.

Big hugs!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate all the support! :-)

Poor Louie seemed STARVING this am...much more then usual. He was growling the whole time I was setting up the food, hissing at the other cats and trying to eat everyone's food. He's not usually as aggressive as he was today. Do you think it's because of the raised BG?

Thanks,

Laura

Yes it's because of the high BGs. When numbers are high, they aren't getting everything they need out of their food so will stuff themselves. We'll see where he goes today....may increase it to 2.25u's tonight. I'll try to keep a watch on your condo today....we're running new drain lines today so won't always be here....

I just wonder if he went lower last night, as you said he was hiding. Did he eat his regular dinner, last night?

Hi Dyana,

Yup...he ate his regular dinner with no issues last night. "Hiding" may not have been the correct choice of words. There are a few different spots around the house where he tends to go a nap. He also like sleeping under the furniture, so you don't always see him. This is not unusual for him. Normally, if I go upstairs and call his name a few times he wakes up and comes running in. But last night I really couldn't call his name that loud, so if he was really sleeping or in a different part of the house, he wouldn't have heard me. My 11 month old son was not sleeping well, so I was very hesitant to make to much noise trying to locate him (Shane had already woken up 3 times since I put him to bed.)

I can't know for sure about his BG levels as I didn't test him, but it's definitely not unusual for him to not be around until I wake him up.

I checked his levels at 1 pm today (2 hours after the insulin) and he is at 262.

262 - I like that lower number and would expect it from Humulin. It's still almost a 200 point drop which is what I meant when I said it puts kitty on a 'roller coaster'. I can already tell Louie is happier from the things you tell us...good work MamaBean...

Hey guys!

Just tested his sugar levels and hes down to 179. Thats the lowest ive seen him go (besides the first day when he dropped to low). This testing was at +7...so I expect it will probably start rising again? I'm doing my best to test every few hours but im really not feeling well plus I am once again swamped with classwork.

My english prof wrote us yesterday and said we could have a break from essays this week and instead would work on a blog (the rough draft is due tonight) except the blog needs to be formal, formatted and at least 5 paragraphs...so yeah...an essay. lol Ive been struggling to get it done...but am pretty much finished. Now I need to move to my history report due Thursday. Ugh...I can't wait until this semester is over.

My mom gets home in a couple of hours. I'll be VERY interested to see if she notices any change in Louie, either behaviorally or physically. I know it's a bit early, but I think his coat is shinier then it was (it had taken on a dull, separated appearance)

Hey as a college student myself, let me give you a tip on how I get testing in and couple it with classwork...I set the timer on the stove for every 2 hours on the days that I'm running curves...then hit the books until the timer goes off, go test, reset timer and back to the books...rinse and repeat as often as needed.

Other days I break up the whole day that way...2 hours for course work, 2 hours for housework, back to 2 hours for course work etc....that way not only do I get my schoolwork done but I don't get to that point where I have studied so long that I'm merely reading the words and not comprehending a thing...lol One of the best things that ever happened to me and my ability to schedule out my time to get everything done in a day was becoming a mom to a sugarcat..lol

Ah, shinier coat is a good sign. :-D
And that 179 ain't too bad, either.
Hope you get all your homework, done ;-)

With Lantus (and Levemir) we let the dose sit for 6 cycles (3 days) to let it settle in and see what it does.
I don't know if it's the same with your insulin. If it was one of the L insulins, I'd say wait another cycle, before adjusting.

Sorry haven't been back.

I would hold that same 2.0 for this evening and tomorrow morning UNLESS something different is happening. We want to try to make the "high" and the "low" numbers shaped like a smile. If you increase yet, I suspect it will just take that lowest number lower and not really affect that top number all that much.

Humulin doesn't work like Lantus but Louie will still bounce on it as a natural protection when his body gets into the lower bg numbers. Unfortunately it's hard to hold them there for long with Humulin.

Laura - IDEA - if you're not assigned specific topics for essays, write one on 'Dancing with a Sugar Cat'! You'd be amazed at how many people don't realize that cats can BE diabetic. I get "REALLY?", all the time. It would save you time too - you're learning all this anyway...write about it.

That is a great idea!!! Right now we have assigned topics, but if we have any free-writes I will definitely do that!! Thanks!!!

I tested Louie a little while ago and he was at 355 I gave him 2 units and will test him again around 12.

On another note....my Seany (3 yr old son) came home tonight! I was so happy to see him! It's been a strange few days without him...but it worked out well as it gave me a chance to get accustomed to home testing with less to worry about. :-) He went to go to the bathroom, hopped on the potty and then hopped off walked out the door with his pants around his ankles yelling to me, asking why there was a litter box in the bathroom. lol I told him it was for Louie so he could come down and visit. Sean then wanted to know if it was also for Smeagle (my beagle). And then he told me he was glad Louie was gonna come down and visit. SO cute. :-) Just thought I would share.
