Vinnie was diagnosed a wk & 1/2 ago. 1 unit of insulin morn. & 1 unit evening. I've just been sporatically successful til now with blood draws. His first number at the vet was 356. His davg over 6 draws is 397 with the insulin. This morning pre food was 476! Why are the numbers going up with insulin? Am I not getting a good shot? He's on Lantus. Looking for some answers before I call the vet like a crazy woman. He seems to be a little off his food this morning & is okay otherwise. . . just snoozing. Just need a little handholding right about now. Thanks. Janet & Vinnie.

There are lots of reasons that could happen - went too low, fur shot, needs more, had a hairball, etc.

We can whittle down the explanations if we see your test data. It really helps track it if you use this formatted spreadsheet

What are you feeding him? Type/brand? wet/dry?

BJ is right - definately need to see more numbers to look for bounces etc. Let us know if you need help with the SS

Thanks All,
Will download the spreadsheet He's eating wet FF Classics 1 can morn. & 1 can evening. The vet said give him 1/2 Cup Hill's DM during the day while we are gone because he is a grazer. I'm now able to get an easy blood draw from his ear thanks to the folks here. I can now be more consistant and maybe do a curve. I am sure my pinch method is good also. With the spreadsheet I will have more info to give.
You folks are much appreciated! Today was my first real meltdown. Better now so thanks again.

That may be part of your problem right there. Dry food, even the Hills DM, is not good for any cats, much less diabetic ones. For vet-written information on diet, please see Cat Info Vets don't get much education on nutritiom and what they do get is often sponsored by the pet food companies. You can leave canned food out all day with no issue.

Sorry about the "911" . . . didn't know if it truly was an emergency. Will be more informed in the future.

That's okay, hon. When my cat was diagnosed, I thought his high numbers were an emergency as well. He still gets high numbers when he bounces, however, his BG always eventually comes down :) Does your cat seem lethargic with the high numbers? Sleep a lot? Gobbles doesn't get overly tired unless his numbers are over about 450.... It is important to get ketone tests done--have you tried yet? If you don't have any ketostix--you can buy them at any pharmacy. Just ask someone at the counter for "ketone testing strips" and they will locate them for you :-D Hang in there and Welcome to our family! We'll help you, support you, educate you and hold your hand cat_pet_icon

Hello there

I am just following up to see how you are getting on. Now that you are testing I am hoping you threw out that dry food - it will really spike his BG and is likely causing a lot of his issues. Plus dry doesnt do their kidneys any favours.

Hows the BG?
