Hello,
The last 3 preshot numbers for my kitty have been in the 500+. I am at home now testing and he is not going down. He got 2 units of Prozinc and now at +5 he is still in the 500's. I have rested every number today and am not sure why this is happening. He is using the little box pretty frequently like he was before insulin. Does anyone have advice? Or know why this is happening? He had a near hypo event on 10/14 and since then his numbers have been all over the place. We are trying to stay at 2 units of insulin twice a day for at least a week but I am wondering if I need to up his dose to 2.25. I do not have any ketone strips but have an order in and they should be arriving any day. I am not sure if that could be causing this or not. He was tested for Ketones in September and did not have any.

Thank you in advance,
-Danielle

Thank you JT and Trouble :) I really appreciate it and will continue to monitor him during his time in the litter box. Also-I really enjoy the quote you have on your signature.

The two cat scenario makes water monitoring a bit trickier alright.

Getting plenty of fluids (from both food and the water fountain) can help flush trace ketones from the system.

Thanks Mogs! Do you think trace amounts of ketones might be causing his high numbers? He gets water mixed in with his Fancy Feast Pate each night for dinner so Ill test again then to see if it is still showing any traces.

It goes the other way round, Dani, hence the recommendation to regularly test for ketones as a matter of course when kitties are running in elevated numbers. :)

It's good that you're adding some extra water to Carlos' grub. You can keep an eye on his hydration levels by pulling up the skin around the scruff and letting it go. If snaps back immediately, hydration is OK, if the skin is sluggish to return to normal position then that shows dehydration. Also, if the gums feel sticky to the touch that's another sign of dehydration.

If you can monitor I'd do 2.25... Being more aggressive with the insulin to hopefully help with ketones. Add lots of water to the food.
