What could possibly cause Chowder to have this much inconsistency in his blood glucose number is all within a few minutes? I checked him back to back after that first reading because I was scared to give him insulin, after I got five higher readings, I went ahead and gave it to him.

all of his readings were done with the alpha track monitor and strips, besides one pet sure strip that I used to try and compare.

I don't know. My only idea would be that the first one was an error, and the other ones are so high that they are all in the same "range". I think I would verify that your meter is calibrated and re-calibrate it using the solution that you should have in the box.
Do you have a spreadsheet? How are his levels usually?

Hello and welcome to FDMB. First, did you double check that 25 when you first tested? That seems really out of character. If you get a test you that doesn't seem to fit it, it's a good idea to retest them. When you say you retested within minutes, how many minutes apart?

Did you use test strips all from the same box? Was the meter set to the correct code? If so, as Cecile said, all the numbers are high. Manufacturers are allowed to have test strips be out by 20%, which in higher numbers can be quite a range. At a blood glucose (BG) of 500, that's 100 points either way. All of which is still "too high". So I'm glad you gave insulin.

Which brings up another question - sorry for so many of them, but which insulin? re-calibrate it using the solution that you should have in the box.
Using the control solution just checks accuracy, it does nothing to "calibrate" the meter. If the value with the control solution is not within the range on the bottle and the solution or strips have not expired called AlphaTrak. Note the the strips/bottle expires both based on the date on the vial and bottle and how long the container has been opened. Frequently, the solution expires based on the bottle being opened too long.

Yes you are right, and that is what I meant. Sorry, English is not my native language and sometimes I cannot find the accurate word. Thank you for correcting!

Hey! Yes, so I rested him immediately and did several more readings within 5 mins. Probably one test every minute or so because that 25 reading scared me. All from the same box and the code was set for felines.

He is on 1u of Lantus twice daily. I just did a curve today and I’m thinking we need to increase some.

We cannot give suggestions on dose based on one or two cycles of data. In post #4 I linked a post that gives information we need to help you better.

thanks, I’ll check that out now. He’s only been on insulin about 1.5 weeks but he hasn’t been under 340 yet which sucks. Checking into the other info now.
