? BG meter problems... help figure out

Hello!! So I have been giving LB his regular dosage of insulin.. and he has had higher numbers then I have really seen. Thought it may have been due to a dose decrease.. But then got suspicious... I tested on Alphatrak and got 3 different number 346,432,417... all within 1 minute of testing... came home a few hours later and tested on an true meter that I have.. True meter read 231.. but the Alphatrak was 493 (this would be the highest number I have seen for him).. seems like the AlphaTrak meter may be off? I used the test strip/liquid and that seemed to work ok... very confused... means insulin not working or meter? Or I am shooting wrong and its going into muscle

Any input appreciated!!!
 
Deep breath! Chances are good both readings (AT2 and True) are absolutely correct. The AlphaTrak meter is programmed to read feline blood which is different from human blood so the scale of the reading will 99.9% of the time read higher on the AlphaTrak than a human meter and the difference in readings will get higher the higher the reading. The only time the readings may be very close or even reversed is in low normal numbers.

Were the 3 tests you took (346, 432, 417) all on the same drop of blood? That alone can make a difference and all readings are allowed a variance of 20%. If not, some of the rise could have been stress induced from multiple testing. It really is best to pick one meter and stick with it.

All sorts of things can lead to a higher BG including stress, some critters outside the window or a noise the cat heard but you were unaware of. If you tested the AT2 with the control solution and it produced a reading within the range specified on the strip vial, it should be good.
The only other thing I would check, if you recently opened a new vial of AT2 strips, is that you have the meter coded to match the code number on the vial.
 
Just checked and its around the same with the new code.. 478.. though he just ate... I wonder if he is bouncing... Deep breathes!! So stressful! Have not seen his number this high.... Thank you so much for input!!!

I also use the AT2 meter. I have seen both my kitties hit black numbers on the AT2 meter when they are bouncing or when I have done a furshot. Sometimes it just takes some time and patience before you start to see the good numbers. :bighug:

It looks like LB is going to need a dosecrease, but since you gave the .75 yesterday, that can effect the depot

If you're doing the SLGS method, you need to hold the dose for 7 days but you might want to seriously consider switching to Tight Regulation

On TR you can increase the dose as often as every 6 cycles, so you don't have to let LB sit at those higher numbers for a whole week before increasing his dose.

You are testing enough to do TR safely now.
 
While there have been reports of the True meters reading low here, there are also people who have used them with no complaints. There are several different meters with "True" in the name. Two of the True meters (True Go and True Result) have been discontinued due to falsely high readings if any contact with some other medically used substances were to occur.The company will upgrade those meters to their newer model.
