So, yesterday morning he tested at 67, gave him gravy lovers & went to work. When i got home, i tested him around 4:30, he tested at 57. Tested again 5 hours later, 52. This morning at 5am, he tested at 47. Gave him gravy lovers mixed with his regular homemade stuff. Tested 2 hrs later, hes at 85.

Im taking the morning off from work, going to tested every 2 hrs.

Hes not acting any different, except he seems tired. He's currently napping, which isnt abnormal, but he slept ALL night at my hip. I know this cause my muscles are sore from not moving because i didnt want to wake him.

Suggestions, comments, etc?

Since you are not giving any insulin right now...looks like an OTJ trial DAY 6 YAH!!! you don't have to give HC food. Some kitties when they go into remission will naturally run in lower numbers. Put the HC food away and just continue with LC wet food. * more days of no insulin and Mufasa is officially in remission. FDMB uses 14 days of normal numbers with no insulin as the official OTJ time.

So, i dont have to worry about low numbers like 47 when hes not on insulin?

He has not had an insulin shot since Friday night.

NO. On a human meter 50-100 are considered normal ranges and with the allowable meter variances that 47 is still in a good range. His body is doing the whole process on its own....how wonderful!! Some kitties will naturally run a little lower than "normal"

Ok, so still give him his regular food. Homemade shredded chicken breast in broth with his supplements?

Im just worried leaving him with that low number.

Just feed the regular balanced food. As long as you are using a good complete supplement with the chicken and broth it will be fine.

Since Mufasa's body is working on its own without any outside insulin you don't have to worry. Even in a kitty or person who has never been diabetic the numbers will fluctuate during the day. This is totally normal. Remember you are using a human meter which gives a slightly lower number than what a pet meter would. So that 47 is still well within normal ranges.

Thanks. I feel better. Im going to leave a frozen serving of his food, just in case.

It's hard not to be nervous in this situation but as others have said, yay! Was his diagnosis around 7/14? If so and he's "normal" now, perhaps the need for insulin was transitory. My vet said sometimes they have decreased pancreas functioning for whatever reason and need some insulin help for a while, but once their pancreas is working normally again, they aren't in need of it. That seemed to be what might be going on with Tigger but it looks like he's going to need some insulin from now on, but we'll see.

Ok. Great!!!!!

@vbc2000
He was diagnosed in the beginning of November 2016. But i thought i could give him better food & he'd be better. But it didn't worked, and he kept getting UTIs. So, 7/14 was his 1st dose of Insulin.

@Djamila
I seen your post on my other thread. I panicked!!!! Lol so i gave him gravy lovers, which he LOVES! Now that i know this is normal, im not going to freak out!!! Lol.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice & support!!!!! Don't know what I'd do without you all.

That's great that he was regulated in approx. a month on insulin!

Rocky, age 7, has experienced low blood, on occasion, since diagnosed Dec. 2016. I see that several of you gave cat gravy lovers type food. He's eating Wellness Core which gets expensive (since we have another cat on special food to lose weight). Are all cats different in what is best for them to it when they have diabetes? Thanks

There's a food list at the top of this group main page. I believe anything below 10 for carbs is acceptable. I know some people feed gravy formulas when they are trying to raise BG.

Hi there,
the Fancy Feast ($0.57 per 2.8 oz can @Walmart) with Gravy - very high in carbs content and not recommended for the diabetic kitties. We use it in small quantities for veery low numbers to prevent further drop in to the dangerous Hypo numbers. On any other day all wet that below 10% in carbs content is OK. I use Friskies Classic Pate non fish flavors - $0.48 per 5.5 oz can at Walmart and Fancy Feast Classic - none fish flavors as well.

The Fancy Feast is pretty moderate in its total caloric value - about 85-90 per 2.8 oz can. You might want to give it a try and see if helps lowering the weight of your kitty over time. There is seldom any true reason to opt for expensive special diet food...

Yes.. We say often here - Every Cat is Different (ECID):)

Why no fish flavors? Mercury? I know not to feed too much but I do feed some.

Mercury, fire retardants that polluted oceans - esp Pacific by California and Mexico, and as per Dr. Lisa - fish is too addictive for cats (ECID) and feeding seafood regularly makes transitioning to other protein sources more difficult and risks allergies. Friskies and FF fish pates are high in Phosphorous - bad for kidneys. Friskies poultry flavors are a bit lower in P.
I too feed Tiki Cat Wild Salmon - once a week perhaps, low P.

Thanks for all that info...I thought it was just Mercury!

it was in 90s..:( unfortunately no one advertises the horrid conditions of our oceans and the quality of food sources we obtain from there. You really need to dig for that kind of info. Very sad, really. It is now advised that humans avoid too much of seafood.

Fantastic site for specific information. I pulled up the food chart vcb2000 suggested and spent a lot of time yesterday going over it and looking at the numbers. Big help. I do know under 10% in carbs is considered low and was looking at that. Didn't realize fish was such an issue for cats. Daughter-in-law coming over this weekend to show us how to home test. Important piece we need to learn. So, I'm still learning, reading and asking questions. Thanks.

Appreciate above info. I'll check it out. Used this site originally because I couldn't seem to get to the screen for posting a new question. Thanks for directing me. Already I'm feeling more confident.
Must say you learn a lot reading the questions and answers you all are asking.
