ive just had something flash up on my pc about meters that test bg AND keytones from the same blood?

Are these any good? Are there any in the uk? The one I saw was in the US.

As Mr C would appear to be prone to them, I guess we need all the help we can get :)

I recently heard about those myself and have been wondering about them. I did read that the ketone test part takes a larger blood sample, so I wonder if that would be an issue.

Yes, those meters do exist. The ketone testing strips are very expensive. It might be worth the expense given everything Chester has been through though. I could be wrong but I think the meter uses different strips for BG versus ketones.

Thanks @Kris & Teasel . Do you know the name of the reliable uk meters? I've started to look, but really wouldn't know a good one from a bad one

Even if I only use the meter once a day, it's got to be better than trying to catch him going to the loo. Poor lad is getting paranoid lol

Yup, thanks @Kris & Teasel. That was going to be my next move :) I thought I'd just ask for ideas / recommendations etc.

I'm guessing the bg readings translate to the AT2?

No, they'd be human meter readings. I don't think they make a ketone meter for pets. If you're using an AlphaTrak now you'll have to get used to the way a human meter reads BG. We can help you with that. The other option is to use the ketone meter only for ketones and your AT meter for BG.

Sorry to piggyback again, but I can also confirm that they do not make a glucose/ketone meter for pets (at least I was unable to find one). I think using the AT for glucose and the other for ketones would actually be easier. You could have both ready to go at the same time instead of having to change the strips in between tests in the meter that does both.

Definitely interested in this conversation. I am rather doubting my ability to catch Lou in the loo to test his ketones, but I've been finding it hard to find any in store or online (that aren't silly expensive at least online). I rather like the idea of blood testing ketones, since it seems to be able to find them sooner I believe.

Hi Ajay, I've just done a search and found the CareSens dual blood and ketone meter.
I first found it on Amazon, but then found it very much cheaper from the link below. The meter itself is free, it's the other bits you have to pay for. But you do need to buy everything separately, so, you need the meter, lancing penlet, lancets, blood glucose test strips and ketone test strips. (With these kinds of meters you need to buy both ketone and blood glucose test strips separately.)

I could only find one review for the meter on Amazon, so don't know how good (or not!) the meter is. But on the link below the price is good, so it might be worth a punt...

Thank you @Elizabeth and Bertie I've been flying around dealing with so many things today, I've not had a chance to research :) Very much appreciated :)

I think it's worth a shot for him. It would take out another little bit of stress for him - crazy lady stalking him in the loo! :D

At least the lil mite has got a great appetite now (one less stress for me! Lol) Tummy seems happier, hopefully less sore :)

Here is another option for a glucose/ketone glucometer. Probably not as cost effective as Eliz's suggestion but another option to consider and look into.

It is my understanding that most if not all the ketone test strips require a larger sample of blood than the AT2 meter which is something to be aware of given the added expense of the ketone strips.

@Squalliesmom I remember you outlining there being a difference in how to interpret glucometer ketone readings for our cats. Can you please ley AJay know the details. Thanks.

@Squalliesmom Oh dear! I think I had another senior moment (having far too many these days LOL!). Maybe it was Bobbie & Bubba. My bad! Thanks for looking up those articles though! You're the best!
No problem, lol, I have too many of those, these days, as well! Might have been Critter Mom, or maybe jayla-n-Drevon. Critter Mom was great about looking up and knowing all sorts of info about everything. Wish we saw more of her, but she almost never comes here since she lost her sweet Saoirse.
