Hi all. I just got some 'One Step Vet-10' urine testing strips, with the idea that I could check for UTIs. But I didn't quite think it through... when I did a urine test for the vet, they gave me (sold me, I should say) some hydrophobic sand. Should I get hold of some of that? How do people manage to collect urine from their cats? Tips and tricks, please! :)

Some.people slide a - dedicated - soup ladle underneath. Others put saran wrap on top of the litter.

What worked for me was emptying the box, and leaving just a sprinkle of litter in one corner. Apparently that was enough to convince him it's a real litter box lol plain old empty box didn't work. I also lock him in the bathroom when I need one, less chance he'll choose to go somewhere else.

I found that a small mini dish worked best. The ladle mentioned above is genius. Every time i tried to catch the stream with the test strip i missed… so i prefer a dish that i had sanitized in boiling water

I have had great luck with long handles measuring cups. When she goes I stick the cup under and I am able to collect the urine with no issues at all. Like these. They are on amazon.

I guess catching it straight from the cat is the best method, as it's least contaminated; my problem is that her litter box is not where I see it, as it's out in our lean-to (like a conservatory, but less grand, and it's cold out there now it's autumn, so I''m not really going to sit out there and wait...)
The aquarium gravel worked like a dream, though! I now have a question about the readings - I'll start a new thread for that.
