Should I test my cat's sugar half way between insulin doses, 2 hours after, or is there a best time? Thank you. Terry and Bill the cat.

Hey Terry,

Skooter is a Lantus user, so I am not sure if it is different depending on the insulin, I am sure there will be more of the knowledgeable users on tomorrow, but I can tell you what I have been told:

Normally, test, feed and shoot within like 10-15 minutes....from there, when I can I try to get a +2 as depending on what that says can give you some insight into how the cycle will go....if you have a spreadsheet, basically see it as a puzzle and fill in different hours as you can on different days....I think they normally recommend a +5 to +7 as well as usually that is when the nadir happens....

Like I said, I am fairly new myself, so you can wait for someone else to confirm those times, but if you look at Skooter's spreadsheet, you will see I try to vary my testing to try and capture all the different times in the big picture....

Have a great one!

Most of use test before each shot and then periodically between shots. Also less often we do a curve where yo measure BG every two hours.

SOme of us also maintain records of our BG testing and other things in a Google Docs spread sheet.

terry - Just wanted to stop by to WELCOME you and Bill to the message board!

It's great that you're already testing at home. Like skootersmom and Larry, I also want to encourage you to start a spreadsheet for Bill. It will really help to see all of his numbers right there together.

Pre-shot tests, combined with periodic tests around the nadir (+5 to +7 hours post Lantus shot) help guide dose adjustments.

Hi Terry and extra sweet kitty Bill and welcome to the message board. Glad you found us here.

Would you please tell us what insulin you are using and how much each shot?
What food are you feeding?
When was your cat diagnosed with diabetes?
Any complicating medical conditions for your kitty Bill?
Would you please tell us where you live? Country, state/province, closest city would be helpful to know.
What meter are you using for hometesting?

Bill was diagnosed several years ago. My vet did a poor job. I now have a vet that specializes in cats. Wonderful. Bill is on prozink. He was doing 6 units twict a day, now is on Fancy Feast canned only and 2 units twice a day. I am testing in the ears, but can't always get enough blood. I had a reading of 325,he was 150 at the vet last time. I am not sure how close to eating and insulin would be best. You all are great.

I am close to Los Angeles, I use the One Touch Ultra2 for testing so far. Bill was not wanting to each much and they foumd a tumor on the liver/pancreas. It was removed recently and was not cancer. He seems to be doing quite well.

If you're not already, warming the ears helps get the blood flowing for the ear prick.

When it comes to food and testing, it's not like your cat is going to be fasting all day, every day, so you're going to have food-influenced numbers. In fact, it's helpful to track when you last fed in comparison with the test. For example, an hour after feeding, you might see the BG rise. Three hours after feeding, maybe you'll see the BGs start to go lower as the food wears off, etc....

Are you trying to test on the "sweet Spot" on the ear?

Here's a picture showing that sweet spot.

Sometimes, 2 pokes really close together give you a better blood drop.

Sometimes, one ear bleeds better than the other.

If you absolutely need to get blood, you can aim directly for the vein.

Do you use the lancet pen, or free hand the lancet? Some people find one method works better than the other.

i have warmed the ear and try for the sweet spot. I couldn't get anything without the lancet pen. I tested today 7 hours after glucose. 344. He is eating small amounts every couple of hours, not large meals. He is still getting used to canned and not free feeding dry. I guess I should pick it up and let him get hungrier.

The more you test, the more the ears "learn to bleed" (angiogenesis) and the easier it will be to get blood. And if you can successfully get him completely off the dry, I think you might also start seeing some better numbers. ;-)
