I'm having the hardest time drawing a .5 dose with my ReliOn syringes and find myself doing far too many "dramatic shots into the air." Are there any recommended syringes that have a smoother draw? I don't know the correct terminology, but the ReliOn syringes seem to stick a bit before getting going and the sudden jerk when it starts to move takes me up to 1 unit or higher. I'm as gentle with it as I can be.

Try moving the plunger up and down a few times before drawing up insulin. The inside of the syringe is coated with a lubricant that helps the plugner slide easily.

It's ok to waste a little insulin when drawing up a dose. Draw up 1 unit of insulin or so, tap to float the bubbles towards the needle, pull plunger back slightly, then slowly push plunger to expel the air bubbles and extra insulin.

I've used the expensive BD UltraFine II and the lesser expensive Monojects with no problems at all. Both are available with half unit markings.

Note: do not put any excess insulin back in the vial or pen, as the syringe lubricant will contaminate it.

I use the Relion syringes currently on .25 dose.
It can be tricky but sometimes just turning the plunger works - I expel a drop or 2 to get to the right level.

Thanks all. JUST when I get the hang of testing (no longer having to poke the poor guy 5 times to get one drop) and we're in a general groove, I reduce the dose and find something new to frustrate me. It shall pass with time.
