Benny's cancer was very aggressive. The fluid would be drained but would come back within a couple of days. At one point 1800 ml was removed from his abdomen. One of the dangers was that the fluid would press on his diaphragm and make it difficult for him to breathe. The cancer was also in his lungs, so that could also have made it difficult for him to breathe.

He had a hiding place behind a settee where he used to go when feeling bad. In the early, uncontrolled days of his diabetes he spent a lot of time there. When a stranger came in the house, that is where he would go, because he was afraid of strangers. He had started to hide there again. I could tell from the pain scales that he was not pain free, and he looked so tired.

So I made the decision to let him go and had him put to sleep on Saturday. I'm just gutted. He was my baby for 16 years and such a close friend of mine. I miss him beyond belief and there is a huge silence in the house--he was such a big cat and a huge presence. I still can't believe he is gone.

I had hoped that Squirrel would be happy about his disappearance. They hated each other and he used to bully her like crazy sometimes. But she seems a bit lost. She has been howling and looking for him in his usual places. Once I found her in his hiding place behind the settee. I used to have five cats and now she is alone. I'll have to get her a companion at some point.

You all literally saved his life. You gave me an extra year with him. I can never forget the generous care and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did for him. I'll always be grateful.

So sorry for your loss Catherine, but you gave him a wonderful life and cared for him deeply and that is something to celebrate. I kept it together reading your post until the part about Squirrel :( :( :( :arghh:

Catherine I'm so sorry for your loss, I have been following your posts, You gave Benny the best life he could ever have and I'm sure he knew how much you loved him. He is now pain free and I'm sure he's chasing butterflies with the kitties that have also passed. I hope in time you will remember all the wonderful times you shared with your precious boy. That broke my heart about Squirrel ,
Please take care Catherine , Benny you will be missed but never forgotten.

I am so very sorry to hear this news. You have been a wonderful mom to Benny. You did everything possible to help him. And you gave him the greatest gift by helping him cross. It’s such a hard and heart breaking decision to have to make.
