Benny's numbers have gone back down into the normal range, so we've stopped the insulin. He saw the vet on Tuesday (Scott took him, since I was working), and after discussing his symptoms, the vet speculated that perhaps it was the terbinafine that he had recently started for the yeast infection in his ears. Thinking back, it was about the time he started it that his symptoms began, so we stopped it that day.
In the meantime, they took blood & urine samples at the vet, as well as swabs from both ears to identify the types of bacteria that were in there. The vet called yesterday afternoon with some of the results, and they were a little shocking. She reported that not only was he anemic, but his red blood cells were clumping. She was ready to refer him to the University vet school nearby, but since his symptoms had improved so much and his appetite was back and his BG in normal range, she was assured that it wasn't urgent and was probably a reaction to the anti-fungal.
So apparently we dodged a bullet - and we will probably overreact any time Benny shows even the mildest symptoms - but we are so relieved that Benny doesn't have anything serious, and to be back on track and off the insulin once again!
