Been sick and not eaten anything since 10pm

its 7am and Bella has been sick 3 times this morning she was meowing at us to get up and went outside to eat grass and has been sick 3 times she has not eaten her breakfast or had anything since last night she usually gets her insulin now,
I will not give her insulin until she eats and if she doesn't eat before 8am I will just miss the dose
Is this the right thing to do, I'm going to work in 10 mons but hubby is here
She has been on insulin for a week and we done home test but will do

If she hasn't eaten, and you're not testing yet, it's not safe to give insulin

PLEASE get a meter and start testing as soon as possible....it's the only way to know what's really going on with Bella's body and how she's responding to the insulin.

Just like you wouldn't ever give your human child insulin without testing first, it's the same with our furkids.

You should also be testing for ketones, especially with her being sick. Urine ketone test strips should be available at any pharmacy that sells diabetic supplies.

Ketones are deadly, but if caught early, it's a lot easier to treat (as well as a lot cheaper and more successful)

Also, if she's still vomiting and not eating later today, she needs to see a vet. Cat's can't go without food for more than 48 hours, and if she's not eating and can't get her insulin, that makes it even worse for the development of ketones.
 
Just checking in so I can keep an eye on your thread in case you/hubby needs urgent help. Can you confirm that you didn't give insulin this morning?
 
Hi thanks for replying Bella ate her breakfast and my husband gave her insulin he says she is fine I have told him to keep an eye on her to ensure she is ok. What is the best meter to buy in the U.K. That could also test for keytones? The last time we tried to test her urine she got really upset and stressed. That was using the litter from the vet. Sorry for the rambling post it's been a stressful morning
 
Looking on Amazon UK, the two that I recognize are the Accucheck Aviva and the Bayer Contour Next - those are ones that I know I've seen people say that they use. Those are for glucose only. This one appears to do both glucose and ketones, but I don't know much about the brand https://www.amazon.co.uk/Call-GK-Dual-Function-Monitoring/dp/B00W1SWR00/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20 The biggest problem I had with the nosorb litter from the vet is that my girl who needed to use it didn't like the litter itself so she would get stressed trying not to have to use it. A better solution may be to either crumple some cling-film over her regular litter or to actually stick a ladle underneath her while she's urinating to catch a sample that way. And don't worry about rambling (not that you were particularly). This is one place where we all understand the stress involved in learning how best to take care of our extra-sweet kitties.
 
Thanks for the reply I think the crumpled up cling film might work as she always pees in the same place in her litter box I will buy the strips tonight to test. I have seen a blood glucose monitor online for £15 and replacement strips are £7 but I don't know how good it is will post a link if I can figure out how

Yes I have seen UKers on this site use that meter and it is certainly good value so give it a go - if you don't get on with it you can always look at another option and meanwhile this is definitely better than not testing at all. A couple of others here use one of the Accuchek meters, and a long-time popular choice is the OneTouch Ultra. When you're researching meters, look not only at the cost of the meter itself but of the strips as well - you may get through a lot! Some people buy strips on ebay if they've been able to ascertain that the seller is authentic and reliable.

My Accu-Chek is the Aviva model. It has the larger screen and has a memory function that goes back to the day I bought it showing date and readings. It will also show highs and lows, 3 and 7 day averages. A dead battery will not wipe out that memory and it can be set to read either Mg/dl or MMol/L. It came with a smaller travel meter, brand name batteries, travel pack and a great and easy to understand manual. You'll feel so much better having one.

That technique usually works quite well for us. Often the cat doesn't even seem to notice that it's there. And the pee collects in the creases of the clingfilm. You only need a tiny amount of pee for a test.

Back at home got ketone strips and have put cling film in the box, as I was writing this she peed and it worked
I have attached the image, instructions said test at 15 seconds exactly and it was exactly that colour, photo was taken afterwards as I was so excited she was ok, poor hubby thought she has passed the cling film and was very worried
Monitor is ordered and she is back to the vet on Saturday, I'm worried that she won't cooperate like the last time I don't want her to be sedated again, thank you all for the help and care it has been wonderful having great advice at this time when I feel a bit like a rudderless ship

A new lancet every time just as you would a syringe. The higher the number the thinner, again just like a syringe. Sometimes the 31 gauge seem like a less painful option but they never worked for me, I use BD 28 or 30 gauge.
 
How is your meter working out? Hope all is well, we have some serious Scottish/Irish connections here 1/2 way across the planet. Mother in law, father in law, Border Collie. It's a small world.

The meter hasn't arrived yet I'm hoping it will come tomorrow, I have found the vein in her ear
For such a small country Scottish people get everywhere, I had a Canadian pen pal many moons ago when people still wrote letters, she found me on Facebook recently and she has cats , I think all the best people do.
I will let you know how she gets on at the vet, off to bed I'm working tomorrow morning
